Love it.
That cheesy synth solo (keyboard set to 'trumpet fanfare' setting) is one of the greatest things ever.

Never heard the record, nor seen the video before. If I have anything to do with it, I'll never repeat either experience.

You're either mad, trolling, or have led a desperately unrewarding life.

It’s bold, it’s ridiculous. It’s stirring.
Stick with yer scratchy 50s B-sides, Ray. Sometimes the smell of the unfamiliar is frightening.

It may have been stirring to a 9-year old in 1982, and maybe I wouldn't have minded it much if I heard it then, but now, which is the question asked, I find the song faintly pitiful, and the video wretchedly, horridly embarrassing.
And it was precisely the stench of overfamiliarity, of recycled dogshit from previous generations of losers, and the putrescent lack of imagination, flair and point* that had been applied to it, that made me dismiss it in the first place. Mind you, there are millions of worse crimes in the history of records, probably would have given it 3.5/10 if I'd heard it in a cup.
Sorry, Jocko

I think as little of it now as I did then. Although it's not quite as dreadful as his (solo) follow-up.

These days? I wasn't even aware of its existence in 'those days'. It's an odd one, isn't it? Sort of like synth pub rock or something. It's not awful, and kinda reminds me of early Ariel Pink when he was just singing along to backing tracks.

It has the whiff of old proggers cashing-in on the synth pop boom, like The Korgis but nowhere near as good.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Re: what do you think of this these days?
I got to thinking about this as I caught Jim Diamond on TOTP2 when we were in the UK. I hadn't heard it for years and in my head, my memory was that it was actually quite graceful and not unlike something Peter Gabrielish.
I was somewhat off the mark but there is still something about the song that keeps my interest. The video is quite shocking though, I didn't remember that at all!

That intro is great, you expect a man in a brown corduroy jacket and yellow tie to start reading the news in a regional accent.
I was going to say I'd never heard it before, but that chorus is really familiar. It sounds like a lost Simply Red track.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
