It may have been stirring to a 9-year old in 1982, and maybe I wouldn't have minded it much if I heard it then, but now, which is the question asked, I find the song faintly pitiful, and the video wretchedly, horridly embarrassing.

And it was precisely the stench of overfamiliarity, of recycled dogshit from previous generations of losers, and the putrescent lack of imagination, flair and point* that had been applied to it, that made me dismiss it in the first place. Mind you, there are millions of worse crimes in the history of records, probably would have given it 3.5/10 if I'd heard it in a cup.

These days? I wasn't even aware of its existence in 'those days'. It's an odd one, isn't it? Sort of like synth pub rock or something. It's not awful, and kinda reminds me of early Ariel Pink when he was just singing along to backing tracks.

I got to thinking about this as I caught Jim Diamond on TOTP2 when we were in the UK. I hadn't heard it for years and in my head, my memory was that it was actually quite graceful and not unlike something Peter Gabrielish.
I was somewhat off the mark but there is still something about the song that keeps my interest. The video is quite shocking though, I didn't remember that at all!
