Professional songwriter/team (Bacharach and David), or performer/songwriter whose songs work really well for other performers (Leonard Cohen)?

Bacharach-David
Holland-Dozier-Holland
Barrett-Strong
Goffin-King
Mann-Weil
and for a few years at least, Lennon-McCartney

Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rodgers/Hart, the Gershwins.

Oh, you mean nothing before R&R? Then Moleskin nailed it, except he missed Leiber/Stoller, Pomus/Shuman and Barry/Greenwich

Well, I was working off the top of my head. Those are all good picks, including the pre-rock choices. Although I did wonder, based on the question, whether Markus wasn't interested more in singer-songwriter types who also wrote for others, or were covered by them.

I surprised myself by realising that in the 60s, Lennon-McCartney wrote hits for other people (mostly cast-offs, if we're honest) like 'Bad To Me' and 'Step Inside Love', but subsequently it's all been covers of their Beatles material, with a few exceptions.

He should. And Marvin Gaye too, I think? Didn't he have a hand in some of the early Motown hits?

Glen Campbell? He wrote Less of Me, Try a Little Kindness, and not much more.

I was going to say "Jimmy Webb."

Hm.

I think mr. P. Domain is up there too.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

Surely you want someone who does perform songs but also writes for others, rather than a lieber or a stoller.

Barry Gibb would win.
