Never Mind the Bollocks turns 40 years old.

Postby Jeff K » 07 Nov 2017, 06:25

Does anybody still listen to this? I can't remember the last time I did. Probably sometime back in the 80's when I brought it again on CD. I"m not one of these people who thought the singles were great and felt the rest of the album was padded out by filler, I enjoyed the entire record. If I'm in the mood for punk there's so many other albums released around the same time that I'd reach for before Bollocks.

Anyway, 40 years old and it still packs a punch.

The last time I played it was over 5 years ago. I was suprised at just how good the damn thing was. Think I’ll dig it out again this week.

I've never heard it the whole way through. I just assumed the singles were all that mattered.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

It's probably 20 years since I last played it. I do have the vinyl gathering dust somewhere, I never felt the urge to buy it on cd. I'll occasionally listen to them on youtube, or I'll watch a documentary or something (I saw the film on McClaren the other day).

I was thinking about how uncool the album is these days. Was it ever? not that it matters much...

Is it a bit of a relic? A cultural artefact?

It seems a bit cobwebby to me.

Which is not a slight on the music itself, but it comes from a time which is obviously, musically speaking, very different from today and divorced from this context I think it suffers somewhat.

The associations with yobbishness. It's thuggish loud music and young people today tend to turn away from that.

It's not sensitive.

And the reformations. Have you seen There'll Always Be An England?

I have some of my LP sleeves framed on my front room wall and Bollocks is amongst them. They've been there a while now so the yellowness of it has been a bit washed out by the sunlight.
In my current mood and with the exception of a few tracks, the music has also turned a bit beige.

There's maybe something in that. It's a pretty uncompromising record in many ways, there's no attempt to vary their sound or anything like that. I agree that these days it's more of an artifact of a particular time and place. Generally these days, The Pistols are more important for their cultural impact than the music. I don't think young people would encounter The Sex Pistols unless they'd developed a particular interest in punk.

and yet....all you have to do is hear ‘and now I’ve got a reason-able e-con-o-my’ followed by the massed chanting/grunting - just wonderful!

Isn’t it? And it’s totally uncompromising, as you said. Some people seem to think the music has lost its power - not a bit of it.

The vinyl has been in my collection for some 35 years (as an album-belonging-in-every-collection item ) - in 1977, I was a dope-smoking hippie and definitely anti-punk. ;)

With hindsight, I understand the urgency and appeal of the singles - but I don't think I ever bothered to listen to NMTB all the way through.

Watching that video made me glad I never went to the gigs. There's something depressing about seeing old punks like that. There was also a vaguely distasteful nationalistic vibe running through the whole thing and you couldn't help notice the absence of any non-white face.
The band themselves were very good though, based on that clip. Tight and powerful, although I don't know how much post-production work went on with overdubbing and cleaning up the sound etc.

That's an EDL video, isn't it? Altogether rather ugly for the first couple of minutes. Drunken skinheads waving flags and singing 'patriotic' songs. No wonder the (single) non-white audience member looked so subdued.
