Re: Russell Morris - The Real Thing: Yea or Nay?
I really enjoyed it and I don't think I'd heard it before, which is surprising given how much of this stuff I've listened to over the years, so thanks!
It's funny that psychedelia was still considered a commercial genre in Australia in 1969, when it was pretty much washed up in the US and UK by this stage. But I've said before that often the most appealing psychedelia is the inauthentic "bandwagon" stuff put together by session musicians and producers in studios for big labels, rather the authentic, organic sound of the SF bands say. It's like they're not afraid to use every sonic gimmick available to make the record stand out and it can result in truly evocative and memorable records.

I think it's pretty special too.
Here's an interesting article that gives a fuller picture of how the song came about...

This is why I like listening to Japanese bands from the seventies , they throw the kitchen sink in all the time.

Was every Australian song ever written written by a Young?

Typical 60’s z division tripe. There are a million examples of this sort of thing. I am not in favour of any of them.

A bit slight, don't need to hear it ever again, but I really enjoyed it.

Thank Christ for that.
Hate that song with a passion. The only saving grace in using the stupid cricket-terminology is that it didn't contain any lbw-references....

G’s dead right.
It’s great. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard it before - if not this version, then a cover.

The Spinal Tap references are amusingly understandable, but totally off the mark. 'The Real Thing' is in no way a cheap cash-in, a novelty song or a pisstake - it's a genuine attempt to create a great psychedelic record. And one that succeeds, too.

It was a major Number 1 hit in Australia and New Zealand, so I guess Russell Morris and Johnny Young were laughing all the way to the bank.

It still makes me laugh although I haven't seen it for years.
Just viewing the above clip, I laughed when they said "the Isle of Lucy". Never understood your antipathy towards it, the details are so spot on.
