I think we need to re-examine these rules as it seems we have a few selections sneaking through that would not quite pass the test:
The Smokey Robinson one where he redoes his own song in Spanish.
The Brons one where they redo their own song in a mariachi style.
The Lulu one where Bowie plays the instruments and produces.
etc etc

Re: Covers Cup
Aw, c'mon, let's not get so serious. I agree that those selections are debatable, but what should we do, establish a committee of admittance for the cups? Most of the times this kind of deviations get penalised at the time of voting (same as it happens in the genre cups, broad church etc.) and I think that's enough.
Nobody's ferpect.

Re: Covers Cup
I can see your point Ed and since in the initial set-up I didn't make clear that foreign interpretations and using different singers on an own production were outlawed, I will state that they are legal.
Considering the vast amount of possibilities regarding the topic matter I hadn't thought about any of these deviations. Up to the voter to dismiss these tracks if they feel they break any code.

Re: Covers Cup
Round 6 is up- that will last until next Wednesday.
Just one quick request- can you please make sure that if you vote it is clear to me that it is a vote? In the last round I had to make a supposition in regards to this which meant that the match ended in a draw.

The third is clearly a cover, the other two are not.
Perhaps a penalty system needs to be introduced for this infringement where 3 points is taken off their score?
Where it does get complex is when an artist records a song written by themselves but already made famous by someone else. Which is the cover? Some Jimmy Webb recordings would fall into this category. But thankfully it hasn't come up....yet.

Re: Covers Cup
I will not penalise anyone in this case, even though in these three cases, the lines obviously are blurred. Strictly speaking, the Bronx and Robinson-versions aren't exact copies or live-versions of the originals and the transcription into a different music style and language could be viewed as a cover. Since I didn't rule these cases out I can't say now that they should not have been entered in the first place.
The second part of your query, Moddie- if the famous version was the first version of a song recorded and publicly available even if it was written by someone else, i would state that being the original.

good idea - the usual voter drop-off.
And round 8 - I'd expected more in earlier rounds, but here come the Bea*les covers!

I'm not sure how long I'll keep voting to be honest. The quality of selections has been appalling for the most part. And I mean objectively really bad, not just 'this isn't my kind of music'. It's feeling like the death knell for BCB cup competitions, which is a shame for Maarts as he's put a lot of work in it.

It is OK G! I enjoy it but it is a shame that there is a difference in the number of votes between rounds 1 and 9....
