XTC - This Is Pop - Sky Arts

Postby Tom Waits For No One » 08 Oct 2017, 16:40

Anyone see this last night?

Long overdue overview of an overlooked band.
It's on again this Tuesday 10th October at 22:30 if anyone can get Sky Arts.
Well worth a squint.
Give a shit or be a shit.

I recorded it. XTC are a band I think I ought to like more than I really do.

Ah, well, no worries
Manage a download from Youtube, but it got six muted parts each one minute, so it will do for now

It was enjoyable, Partridge trying to be annoyed yet loving having to do it was funny to watch. Learned a lot about them and was reminded of some of their tunes I forgot about. Never knew about the controversy around "Dear God".

I'd say it's the song - if they are know at all - that they are known for here with Peter Pumpkinhead" & "Generals and Majors" tied for distant second.

You think so?
'King for a Day' broke through pretty big, but yeah, they're TOO ENGLISH to do much over here, right?
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

For those who are partial 'Black Sea' is the next album to get the box set treatment.

First I remember hearing them was "Senses Working Overtime" in the early years of MTV.

I think the real "radio" of today is songs used in movies & advertising. "Dear God" is featured in a lot of movies. it's in "IT" and for more than just a few seconds.

"Nigel" was the one that sold me. I went backwards and discovered the intermittent pleasures of the first two. they didn't exactly lose me along the way but I'm much less enthusiastic about some lp's than others.

I was at a record signing when "Apple Venus" came out that took HOURS. I saw more vinyl copies of "English Settlement" that evening in Hollywood than any other single item - for what that's worth.

Just finished watching it. Splendid stuff. One of the most informative and enjoyable rockumentaries ( sorry, Andy ) I've seen.
