Post a song about a city you like

Postby never/ever » 08 Oct 2017, 01:18

I always liked the lyric to this song- Sydney From a 727- simply, because I have seen this sight many a time when coming back from overseas. Virtually all those flights land at Sydney airport early in the morning so you can catch the sunrise beautifully then.
Sometimes you don;t need an elaborate description or a passionate lovesong to describe a place- this works very well for me:

"Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night?
Sydney shines such a beautiful light
And I can see Bondi through my window way off to the right
And the curling waves on a distant break
And the sleeping city just about to wake
Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night?"

This is the song:

How 'bout my hometown? A little South Texas town remarkable only for it's remarkable breakfast tacos. When I was a kid, we had four Dairy Queens! Most are now repurposed as taco joints. Incredibly, two songs namedrop the town. Both come from San Antonio, which is half an hour or so west.

Here's one from Don Santiago Jimenez. Father of Santiago and Flaco, and Conjunto Pioneer.
I've never heard words for this, but it's a South Texas standard. It's possible it could refer to Tejano Hero, Juan Seguin, who is also the namesake of my hometown. This is a great clip from Les Blank's "Chulas Fronteras," which I recommend. It features Santiago Jr. on guitar, who went on to his own success on the accordion.

Doug Sahm was not really a gifted lyricist and has lots of songs about places. This one improperly places Seguin "south of San Antone." To be fair, "east of San Antone" doesn't have the same ring to it. It's a nothing song, but I love it, of course.

Just found this by googling.

Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Yomp gave me the heads up on this movie and I genuinely love the song, Fireball and as it so happens, it name checks my home town also. We have plenty of curry houses but we've always lacked a Dairy Queen.
With the microphone is Sean Pertwee (son of the 3rd Doctor Who, Jon Pertwee) and that's Trevor Laird on backing vocals.

Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

I like the sentiments you quoted (but lyrics later in the song are shite) but Holy-H-Fucking-Christ that is one awful song. Dear god.

[Off topic: I've flown in (and out of) Sydney at various times of day and yeah it is special. I hear 'Great Southern Land' in my head when flying over the desert. But my favourite is looking up at the night sky and seeing the Southern Cross and hearing the CSN song. General flying songs, especially if flying away from your lover .. This Flight Tonight ..]

As far as songs about cities you love - nope can't think of one just now. :(

No no ... for me the city has none of the vibe of the song at all.

That hasn't stopped me humming it in Istanbul.

Or 'if you go to San Francisco' .. at Haight-Ashbury (yeah song was quite vibey)
or 'on Broadway' on Broadway (ditto)
or 'Scarborough Fair' in Scarborough (no vibe)
or 'Molly Malone' in Grafton Street  (tourist vibe)
or 'Lost in France' in Boulogne (I was young, gimme a break)
or 'sur la pont d'avignon' .. you get the idea (what do you think)

These songs just pop into your head because of a word or few. Eg I've woken up in Chelsea in London singing Chelsea Morning which is about a hotel in NY.

Still can't think of a song which clearly captures the vibe of a city I love

I did find myself -- well, singing isn't the word -- this at the Marble Arch station.

Confirmation, if it were needed, that everyone in Norwich is a bell.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
