Probably the funkiest thing they ever did, but it still reeks of whiteness. I love the instrumental solo - I can't remember if it's a hammered-on guitar or a keyboard, but it's a great sound.

I just listened to the tune again and it's quite obviously a guitar at around the 3:20 mark of the studio version which dissolves into some weird envelope-filter mess. Love it.

Rather too strident with that stop/start construction. I don't find it very funky or a particularly attractive tune. I like them generally, but not everything they did was great as this proves.

I seldom spin it unless I'm listening to "The Royal Scam" which I think is a very good record. I never skip the track but I rarely seek it out on it's own merits.

I forget what Steely Dan I was listening to but my wife said "this is the whitest music you listen to" So, I can see why so many find it so bloodless but I like that sort of thing. critics called it "ennui". just call me in time for dinner.

I think this track has a tight little groove and I'm a straight up sucker for Fagen's vocals. I love the guy's voice. what the hell is this song about? Is he going to steal her earrings or is it some sex metaphor?

I'm cool either way. I'd give it a 5 out of 10 possible rings of rare design.

I’ve heard this a few times lately. The guitar work is outstanding. I’ll bump my 5 to an 8.

[The Fish]

A fair way down my ranking of Dan albums. and not at the top of Royal Scam tracks even. That said I like it of course although there are a ton of Dan songs I like better, but listening now it's better than I remembered. The guitar really lifts it up a notch or three, and the solo is majestic.

This kind of track is where I can grudgingly see where the Dan deniers are coming from, even if I think they are wrong (if not certifably mad).

Great thread idea. Looking forward to future instalments.

Great track, from a great album. Parts of the song remind me of Zappa at his best.
