Peter Perrett Solo album June 30

While the sampler here sounds pretty good, you'd expect it to be.

Sadly, given PP's rather patchy post-OOs career, doubt if the rest of this will be any better than a kind of musical curate's egg.

Anyone agree or disagree?

Watch out for plugs in Rod Liddle's various newspaper columns - he and PP are great mates...

He is, but when the OOs reformed a few years back, RL wrote a big puff piece about how great the band was in the Sunset Times so he does have some redeeming features.

In the piece, RL recounted how PP had loaned him cash to buy a replacement guitar when his own was stolen when he played in a band that supported the OOs about 40 years ago. He also wrote the sleeve notes for the most recent reissue of the OOs' three CBS albums

Anyone got or getting this?

Got a splendid review in today's Guardian from Alexis Petridis, plus the expected glowing write up from Rod Liddle in the Spectator (it seems even the appalling Mr L is not without one or two saving graces!)

I had big reservations when I heard about this. Big, big reservations. I'm glad to say, I'm quite wrong. I imagined, it would be 'phoned in'. Nope, the mischievous humour is there, the songs are hot -- and it pisses all over the Woke Up Sticky nonsense.

I'd recommend it. Only had it 24 hours, but it's a strong contender to be one of my favourite albums of the year.

Listening now.

Opens with an If Not For You rip off riff, a good sign?

It's fuckin great. I'll have nothing said against it. It's a constant source of joy in my life that he's still alive.

If it can bring some joy into Jumpers life. Then that's enough for me to give it a listen

I had to be patient 'cause I think the first track is the worst, but I agree with the superlatives. He's fully possessed of his faculties, and singing great. Not only alive but inspired. I think being alive (against great odds) is probably inspiring him. :D

I agree the first track is sub-par Dave. My enthusiasm for all things Perrett got the better of me. I listened to it again on the way into work this morning and I struggled to get past An Epic Story, its a thing of real beauty.

Thumbs up for me too. It's good. The first Only Ones album has been a joy in my life since I ripped off the shrinkwrap after buying it many years ago.

Well I had a listen last night. First impressions are that it's brilliant and will only get better. It is so beyond what you'd expect him to be able to produce its astonishing really. The first song is just a rewrite of Sweet Jane after that it's stellar.

Welcome back to the real world, Peter.

I like Liddle. The review, which is worth reading, is here https://www.spectator.co.uk/2017/06/peter-perretts-how-the-west-was-won-is-a-beautiful-work-lush-with-swirling-melodies/

He also recently gave Snoop Dogg's new album a very positive review in the Speccie, which made me smile.

Really looking forward to hearing the Perrett lp now, I'll get hold of it later today.

Still waiting for Amazon to despatch my copy. At this rate, even the legendarily tardy Mr P will have another album out by the time I get it.

Might get this. Sounds like i would enjoy it very much. Nice to see he has made it back to the land of the living.

Wasn't aware that the odious Rod Liddle reviewed albums for The Spectator. I am surprised that cesspit of rancid bile even has a cultural life. His reviews are quite interesting; but they seem to suddenly stop with a pithy last sentence just when he is about to go into more detail on each album.

Wonder what Luke Haines thinks of him being such a fan of his lyrics? Liddle is the sort of guy Haines usually mercilessly skews on the sharp end of his acidic class observations.
