Baby Driver
I'm off to the premiere tonight. The reviews have been almost universally celebratory.
Not sure if it's my cup of tea, but I'll report back later with a full review.

Re: Baby Driver
Spacey is very selective over his film projects so that's a good sign.
Of course it may turn out that this was the one he made cos he was broke!

I fancy it but that's a terrible title

Re: Baby Driver
Apparently it takes place in Atlanta, filmed here, and is full of local references.
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Re: Baby Driver
It's also apparently got a jukebox style soundtrack with a car chase devised around Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Bellbottoms.

It's actually the title of a book by Jan Kerouac, Jack's daughter. Doubt it's related though judging by the poster.

So far I've liked all of Edgar Wright's films and have heard nothing but praise for this new one. I'm looking forward to it.

The review I read today said the director almost over-relies on music in the film. I hope they have the KISS song, Baby Driver, in it.

Re: Baby Driver
Thankfully not!
Top notch film, anyway. Hugely enjoyable. The first half especially was an absolute fucking blast. And if there was ever a film for BCBers...
I'm now going to find out whose 'Baby Driver' was used over the closing credits...

Hmmm...maybe I'll open my mind to it.
The previews looked dreadful.

I'd guess Simon & Garfunkel.

I'll probably wait until the night the Planet of the Apes movie comes out to see it, so I'll be sure to see it in a mostly empty theater.

Re: Baby Driver
This is a movie with no redeeming feature. Just an empty, hollow shell.
This is where you really begin to appreciate someone like Quentin Tarantino. For all his faults, he would've made an eminently watchable movie out of this. As it stands, this is just extremely boring. I don't know where to start. Maybe the setting - Atlanta - I've never been there, and maybe it's the most boring city in the world - and if that's the case they've succeeded in portraying an utterly characterless city, which is kind of unforgivable in a movie where car chases - with their surrounding environment - are its central premise. The characters - just very uninteresting. Jon Hamm - completely unconvincing as a genius bank robber who defies death more times than a Scream movie towards the end. Kevin Spacey - why on earth does his character suddenly essentially sacrifice his own life so that Baby can survive - when Baby has just actively destroyed his whole empire? Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And Baby Driver himself - they try to make him out as a saint by the end it, forgetting that he has essentially enabled several small massacres ("but he said sorry to the little old lady when he stole her car"...fcking please) so that he can be released after a couple of years of jailtime. There are a few scenes where his resemblance to Marlon Brando is uncanny, but ultimately i find that he had to many affectations - even just the opening scenes where he's strutting his stuff to Bob and Earl he's just too self-conscious. And the love interest - another waitress with a heart of gold...sigh..."getting away with a plan we don't have" etc etc yawn. The pair had zero chemistry.
Even the much-heralded soundtrack was all over the place for me - just trying to get a hipster a'la carte of soul and indie.
The only thing my wife and I concluded was in any way fun about this movie was the use of Ipods. The ipods were pretty cool. The rest is sht.
