Modern psych
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Re: Your 5 favourite 'psychedelic' songs
Well for starters how about this one :
Lemon Pipers - Through With You (9mins and a few seconds)
They're well known for "Green Tambourine", but this perhaps scores a bit...er...higher
5 you say? I'll have to get back to you with some others...

I like both of those as tunes, gashy, but wouldn't really call them psychedelic myself i think. There isn't quite enough ... trippy-ness, however that's measured.
This one, especially the chorus, hits it bang on for me...

Relevant, perhaps, to the matter of "quantifiable trippiness", there is a section in "Legend Of A Mind" by the Moody Blues (1968 - good year for them) in which the Mellotron goes into some areas that...I dunno, I was listening to it with friends and we all started laughing as the "outre-ness" of the performance climaxed with a sort of "These people claim to have taken LSD and...well, let's just say their story is really starting to check out" flourish.

I live in the Springtime - The Lemon Drops
Good For Me - Blow Up
See Emily Play - Pink Floyd
The Universal - The Small Faces
Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb
I would say that The Universal and I Live in the Springtime live at opposite ends of the psychadelic spectrum.
One is a slightly trippy pop song the other is full on musical hall weirdness and Tubas. See Emily Play probably resides pretty much between them.
Blow up is a very Nuggetsy 80s take on psychadelia and Little Fluffy Clouds is the Orb at their popiest but still psychadelic

Nice, i'm glad to see this here. Loved the album back then, even if i seldom reach for it now. Electronic dance music can be quite psychedelic, and The Orb could do it well. To steal Bent's term, the "quantifiable trippiness" is high in this one.
Psychedelic elements are not unknown in Blues, but it's a genre that is usually not as associated it, am i right? I guess The Doors came at the right time to show that the 2 could have a very firm and beautiful connection, but i can't think of many other powerful exponents of that mix.
A personal fave which sprung to mind though is this one, Sam Taylor Jr.'s 'The Tunnels Of My Mind'...
The trippiness created by the organ and guitar is heightened by Sam's heavily-echoed, anguished vocals, and i find myself drifting in an emotionally uneasy feeling that i find very much key to some of my favourite psych.

There is a fair amount of "pre-psychedelic music" that seems to have all the moves down - doo wop, girl group, early rock and roll, hillbilly, exotica, etc. All these tracks by different people who were probably NOT trying to serenade the kids about turning on, but nonetheless working these very disorienting, far out, impressionistic angles.

Yeah, very true. Think about songs like 'I Only Have Eyes For You', Nolan Strong's 'The Wind' or 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', and those disorienting, far out elements really stand out.

After not playing it much for many years, I've found myself playing it loads recently, and it stands up really well. It still sounds like the future to me now!

Compared to the might of An Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld' off the same record it is rather fluffy by comparison

Steve Tibbetts - Desert
Can - Future Days
Oneohtrix Point Never - Stress Waves
Steve Reich - Music for 18 musicians
Fennesz - Caecilians
I find 'traditional' psychedelic music to be pretty tame when flying if I'm honest.

Oh, yeah. The Flamingos number is an alpha example for sure. Similarly, even as the world moved on ("post Altamont" seems as servicable a way to put it as any), a lot of subsequent (and nominally disparate) music sort of retained and expanded on some of those effects and intentions. A lot of the sort of "post Motown sweet soul muzak" of the early/mid 1970s is trippy as fuck in its way ("Natural High" by Bloodstone), some disco, chart pop, plenty of post-punk and new wave, and so on...
I'm probably most taken by/pleased with the empirical reality that you don't need granny glasses, stylized mysspelled wyrds, paisley and tape flanging to keep moving the "distortion of reality" forward. No slight intended to anyone working very rigid retro aesthetics in subsequent eras, but...for me, that type of hyper literal revivalism may be the least compelling form of "exploring inner space".

Re: Your 5 favourite 'psychedelic' songs
Obviously, I could happily post five (each) Beatle/Hendrix/Pink Floyd/Moody Blues or whatever (King Tubbby, for instance) records. And then there were my enthusiastic shoegaze years, to which these five may allude . . .
King Tubby "Great Stone"
Shuggie Otis "Strawberry Letter 23"
Sonic Youth "Diamond Sea"
Spacemen 3 "Losing Touch With My Mind"
MBV "To Here Knows When"

Intensely immersive music, physical.

Re: Your 5 favourite 'psychedelic' songs
I must admit, i tend to struggle with this kind of stuff^^, gashy. It's not necessarily the length, more that the classical instrumentation (if i can call it that) doesn't capture my attention as well as a rock or jazz tune. It's an issue i've always had; maybe it will click down the track.
Two fab choices. Groovy psych just mixes 2 of my favourite things together, so when it's done well it hits my pleasure zones bang on.
Two songs i love in that vein ...
