Well, I've been billed $110 US by Amazon and they claim I'll be united with this thing by tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile, MP3 versions of the new mix and the outtake CDs are already out there in the ether. I feel like I can wait.

Going to walk to work on this sunny afternoon with a handful of the outtakes playing on headphones. Really excited.

Will report back...

So are we doing a synch listen on the 1st?

Could do the first Bowie after :)

I notice that 'Strawberry Fields Forever' is a '2015 Remix'. Presumably that was the audition?

It was made for the 1 DVD, I believe.

I really notice the "edit point" on this one - which I never really did on the '67 mixes.

Sprung for the 2cd version in Sainsburys this evening, £15, and grabbed that Free 5 Classic Albums for £9 at the same time.

Man, wish already i'd bought the big box, really hard to read the inlay booklet (i know, a minor point, the music is the important part but still, tiny black writing on green background screws with my eyes, need to get stronger glasses,) but that aside, gonna give this a nice play tomorrow. it can wait for tonight, Saturday play for me, empty house, play loud, starting with cd2, of course.

The new documentary (which isn't in the box, btw) doesn't feature any Beatles' music or any Beatles talking about the music (unless you count Pete Best):

The docu that's included in the box is this one, I think:

£40 saved for other editions. The Japan one at £252 for instance.

SO WHAT'S THE WORD, PEOPLE!?

I started reading the Hoffmen's reactions (which, as to the new remix, are decidedly mixed), but my god they're a tedious bunch.

Amazon UK shipped mine today.

Personally, I'm primarily there for the outtakes/sessions.

And...yeah, no disappointment whatsoever there. They delivered the good shit. I'd have liked another couple discs worth, but...the two discs of "the Beatles making Pepper" are amazing - no repurposed Anthology mixes, all freshly excavated and presented in pure "this is what happened on the session" mode (as opposed to "composites"). Engaging, revelatory - if you are a student of this shit, it's indispensable. The handful of period mono mixes appended to the end of the fourth disc are similarly wonderful to add to the collection.

As for the remix - I only played it once, and it's a mixed bag. If you have the idea that Pepper is the shit (certainly my belief), you undoubtedly already have the 1967 stereo and mono mixes. This won't supplant whichever of those is your favorite (mono, obviously), but it's a real sort of Zapruder experience - experiencing this deeply familiar 13 song sequence from a previously unavailable point of view. Things like "Getting Better" have a considerably different character, and - yeah, there's something essential about the new mix. If Giles Martin's goal was to transpose the integrity of the mono mix into the stereo field, I'd say he hits his mark far more often than not. The recreation of all of these period effects (various types of tape based flanging, for example) is beautifully and lovingly rendered.

The 5.1 mix I only played once - I didn't necessarily see God, but...I also (to date) have had a devil of a time successfully setting up effective surround in this particular apartment. I suspect some of the failing is mine here.

The package? Sexy as hell. The lenticular cover, the big book, the posters, the tape box. Some people know how to sell physical product in 2017.

Nearly 55 years after "Love Me Do", Beatles music continues to be worth AT LEAST what they're charging for it.
