Re: PROG CONTENT: Caravanserai
A bit of both; just depends on your point of view.
Personally, I think it is an absolute monster of a record. The total consummation of everything the Santana band had been working on up to that point - a unique fusion of latin rhythms, blues and rock, laced through with a deeply poppy, melodic sensibility. All of these aspects come through in beautiful relief on Caravanserai, which also sounds as magnificent sonically as any record of the time to me, from the chirping crickets to the band at full throttle.
(Not sure why the "PROG CONTENT" has to be there though, C, to be honest. )

Easily the best of the band's fusion albums - and a fine cap to their classic '69 - '72 run. Of course, 1974's Lotus is great too.

Caravanserai is their last great album. The slope got slippery immediately after it.
Pontificating incorrigibly since birth.

I disagree....I certainly rate Lotus, Love Devotion & Surrender, Moonflower, Blues For Salvador and Borboletta as damn fine albums too.

The only one out of that lot that I rate is Love Devotion Surrender and that is not a Santana LP

Wow. I was sure you rated some of these too.
I'm playing Moonflower now... What a sweet melodic album this is.

Okay Maarts - I may have been a bit harsh.
I have just played Borboletta and it is a fine album. I suppose at the time I was very disappointed and I saw them on this tour and I had seen them a lot better....
The first four are seminal albums - one of the best 4 album runs (from debut) ever.
I'll respin Moonflower later

Okay - Maarts do we agree that the one that followed Caravanserai - Welcome was poor.
That is what did me in - I was so disappointed. I saw them on that tour too (not that great but that was down to the current material....)

Re: NOT NECESSARILY PROG CONTENT: Caravanserai
Stephen, Borboletta is no better than Welcome. Spend time with both and you will see. They're practically one double album. And if you rate Lotus, then I don't know why you didn't love them when you saw that tour because if memory serves, it's the same band. Moonflower is the last great one from the '70s, and Amigos has at least three great tracks.

Matt, I tried Welcome again tonight and I just can't get on with it.
Sadly, I never warmed to Lotus
With the exception of Borboletta my mind, brain and body are locked into the first four.
I am never keen on 'funk' tracks
Oh well, back to Abraxas....

I don't play it that often but I do love Flame Sky of it. Great track.

Fair enough. but I just don't see that much difference between Welcome and Borboletta. He barely even plays guitar on the latter.

Caravanserai : I f you are a vinyl listener, this truly is one album that can be "make or break" according to the quality of your playback chain.By "quality" I do not assume cost.

Back in the day, and over time, I had to buy about 6 different vinyl versions of Abraxas before I got a decent one!
Surface noise or what..??!!
