Re: Joan Armatrading
Looks intriguing, but are there the 5 you'd want??
Looks like it's:
Joan Armatrading (1976)
Show Some Emotion (1977)
Me Myself I (1980)
Walk Under Ladders (1981)
The Key (1983)
I only have the Gold double cd collection. I've already bought the Parliament 5cd box. Been tempted by the Free 5cd (£9 in sainsburys but misses the debut, i want all their albums,) but could be tempted by this one by Joan.

I've no idea if these are her best ones either. I only have the self titled and a compilation both of which I like but never explored further.

For the price i'm more than willing to take the chance on these but always good to hear some recommendations for Joan's best records.
Anyone???

Re: Joan Armatrading
The 5 CD pack will give you albums 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9.
Whatever's for us (1972)
Back to the night (1975)
To the limit (1978)
Steppin' out (1979) the live album
and a one sided vinyl How Cruel (4 songs)
are missing.
I had all of these in the 70's except The Key but saw her live on that tour.
You can't really go wrong with what's on sale.

I only know her early radio stuff, and I had Walk Under Ladders. I think it's aged pretty well.

These are the very best, but I like all her records.
Back to the night
Show some emotion
To the limit (my favourite
Walk under ladders
Me myself I
Secret secrets
Hearts and flowers
Her most recent, Not too far away is also pretty good.
The thing is honestly that all her albums have several brilliant tracks on them but few have ten brilliant tracks.
I am a big fan and have seen her play live several times (perhaps more than anyone else).
She will be 70 in December this year. Surely it is time for a career box set with collected rare b-sides.

I think I saw her in 1976, supporting Nils Lofgren who would have been promoting Cry Tough and bouncing off a small trampoline while playing guitar. If I remember correctly, it was the first time I ever got stoned and I remember sod all about it.
I feel like I saw her twice around that time but I really can't remember.
Anyway, as someone who loves Love and Affection but has never knowingly listened to another recording, please could you suggest one album to begin looking into her, other than a greatest hits?
Bugger off.

Or Back to the night, which is more jazzy.
Or To the limit, which is my favourite.

This reads ambiguously. What I mean is that I have seen Joan Armatrading play live more times than I have seen anyone else play live. Not that I have seen her more times than anyone else has seen her.

Thanks for the suggestions. Under the Ladder didn't work for me. I think I'll try Me, Myself, I next.

Righteous.
Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

Re: Joan Armatrading
I’ve got a compilation on vinyl that is fantastic. But one album’s enough for me.
