A few years back we had a thread about "strange/unexpected songs" that became hits (things like Ghost Town), and I submitted this one - I don't think it's the best that Soundgarden has produced, but it's just such a weird fcking song I think.

Still preoccupied with this. More than all the other deaths recently combined. The only one that meant anything to me in 'real time'. Suicide.

Fuck.

Grim.

No way to rationalise it really.

Preoccupied is the right word for me. I don't take celebrity or musician deaths too hard. I may have enjoyed someone's music or art, to the point it gave me meaning and inspiration, but the art lives on, and it's not like I knew the guy or gal personally.

There are only four musician deaths that have preoccupied me.

John Lennon
Phil Lynott
Willy Deville
Chris Cornell

Probably because I think they had more to give, selfishly.

Chris Cornell, because he had two small kids who are going to have to deal with their dad's death, on just as he reaches puberty. I have a couple of good friends whose dads committed suicide. One of them was 14 and he discovered his dad, hanging, when he came home from school one day. It affects him to this day. It's what my mind went to when Lennon died - how's his son Sean going to feel now that his dad's been ripped from him.

Wasn't Prince on Ativan too? Is it a good time to have that nice long talk about goddam prescription drugs yet?

Ativan was just one of the drugs. I think that's also the problem - these folks are combining medications.

Don't listen to Soundgarden often, but this hit me very hard nonetheless. A great talent, a monster voice.

RIP Chris. Prayers and peace for his family.

P.S. If the side effects of your anti-anxiety drug include suicidal thoughts, perhaps it shouldn't be on the market.

Never a fan of his music, but I know TONS of people who knew him personally. Not a single one has had anything bad to say about him.

That saddens me a lot more than if I had just known him through his music (even if I'd been a fan).

I sort of liked Soundgarden but wasn't crazy about them, really.
Great voice, though, and his first solo album Euphoria Morning, was very pleasant.
Now I just picked up his last solo album, Higher Truth, for next to nothing in the sales.

There are some amazing tunes on there!! This slays me:

I was never a particular fan of his lyrics, but these are good, the simple arrangement goes beautifully with the words and he holds his voice in for it

really good stuff, thanks Neige

Songs that blow me away purely due to his vocal:
