Maybe it's because it isn't pear season. They are barely in the flowering stage at this point. Yourr pear is from somewhere else so of course they don't ship ripe fruit.

Nothing worse than a mealy apple, but you can't tell until you take that first bite.

Some types of pears will benefit from spending a few days in a brown paper sack. If it is picked too green, this won't make ot taste leagues better but it will be easy to eat and maybe a little juicy.

Quince require cooking. You would never eat one raw.

The best thing is to buy local fruit and if that isn't possible, buy what's in season, not somethng that is in season 3,000 miles away.

I've been noticing bananas have been sucky lately. I usually buy them in the late winter/early spring when there isn't much of anything locally. I've read that the predominant type of banana was decimated by a disease or pest and so the industry is scrambling to recover. The bananas I had this year had a mealy texture.

Kiwi fruit always seem to be sold under-ripe in the UK, I suspect it's because people use them mainly for garnishing rather than to eat.
