So let’s avoid that kerfuffle and accept without argument that all sorts of indie, emo, metal and otherwise unclassifiable subgenres of rock are hale and hearty. Still, what about the mainstream stuff? Is there mainstream stuff? Does corporate rock still suck? Or does the old geezer lack the lung capacity?

To investigate what “popular rock music” might sound like nearly two decades into this awful century, we turn to the sad, confusing world that is the Billboard “Hot Rock Songs” chart, a grab bag of recorded miscellanea that some cohort of someones (radio programmers? Billboard editors? actual rock fans?) has hastily (as we used to say back in the record store days) filed under “rock.” Let’s zip from #10 right on up to #1 and see what's left of commercial rock in 2017.

well, I'm glad I read it just for the first paragraph. as for the bulk of the article - shrug.
people have been saying what rock and roll is and isn't for a good long time. maybe this will stop when rock and roll actually stops existing but I doubt it.

From where I sit there's as many rock bands as ever. There's just not many that make music lots of people hear. I was trying to think of the last Big Rock song that permeated the national consciousness, where everybody knows that song. I'm thinking it was either "Seven Nation Army" or that song by Jet that sounds like Lust For Life. What was that, fifteen years ago?

we see at least 40 to 50 concerts a year almost all some form of rock. Never cared for what is in the mainstream although sometimes we cross paths.

Fans have always wanted to feel different from the great masses of people in the world. In the past, you could have an artist who was popular but still filled that need, e.g., David Bowie or Nirvana. But it does seem that now, musicians do weirder fusions of things, and since there is much less of a vehicle for mainstream music (broadcast radio), there is no real mainstream-alternative. It's either super-mainstream or niche music that only a few people like -- which has a lot of freedoms, so people aren't that hungry to change that!

I tried to watch the latest installment of Later two days ago.

I fount it quite dreadful.

Even Weller didn't inspire me.

And there was a band whose name I forget - Scandinavian? It was the modern equivalent of Men At Work, or Buggles, only ten time worse.

Yes, rock is dead. Tonight I shall be dancing on its grave, whilst listening to The Goldberg Variations, arranged for viola da gamba (6 players), by Fretwork.
