I mean, you take the likes of Fripp, Bill Brufford, Mike Giles, Tony Levin, John Wetton and more, and these all rank on the highest tier of their respective instruments, rock or otherwise. Personally I like hearing good musicians play but in this regard Crimso wins out, because they play with notes as much as textures and ideas.

I didn't mean to suggest that Softs were necessarily better musicians. KC has obviously had amazing musicians in its ranks throughout its history. My point was more about how later Soft Machine albums are basically pure, instrumental jazz-rock, and more and more I'm in the mood to hear expertly performed instrumental rock without the need for power chords, bombast and (often silly) lyrics.

You know both good points here. In my eyes KC musicians were better musicians. However, the difference here for KC and Soft Machine is what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes its KC (then again depends on the era) other times Soft Machine. Both outstanding bands.

KC seemed to invent a special sound, almost classical and definitely eclectic, changing every couple albums, whereas SM invented the patterns and fuzz organ-bass thing in 1968, and steadily worked towards more conventional fusion after that. True? KC was sonically more varied and interesting, whereas SM invented one great thing.

Anybody got live Soft Machine recommendations?
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I have umpteen live Softs album - it depends on what version/line-up you want.

The two BBC albums might be up your street (Softs 1 -3 )

Thanks, those look good. I'm not averse to a quality post-Wyatt live recording.

I too love the BBC sets, particularly the first one (this version of "Moon In June" comes as close as one piece of music can to summing up this band's charms, for me) - but they aren't "live" in the usual sense of the word. Generally live in the studio, I suppose, but most of Wyatt's and Ayers' vocals, at least, are surely overdubbed.

(the piano's obviously overdubbed there, too)

Fidelity-wise, it's not very good, and the vocals get buried when the band gets loud. But for this version of Hope For Happiness alone, it's worth hearing.

You know what?
I was wrong about The Soft Machine.
They are just annoying.
Stupid hippies with no tunes and an overinflated sense of their worth
Couple of fun tunes early on then they disappear up their own arses quicker than a Tory during conference season.
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

:) I'd tone it down a bit but I do broadly agree with that. But only with respect to The Soft Machine, not Soft Machine.

I love some Soft Machine, but listening to KC's Red last night, I was left wishing they had done something that well-conceived and realized. When the Softs got it right, it was mostly by charm. An intangible thing and a wonderful thing to be sure, but didn't always lead to great results. Much of KC's music just stands there and nothing can really tear it down.
