I started working in the record shop in Glasgow just before Life in A Day single came out. As we were the biggest shop in Glasgow we sold shed loads of it. I remember a girl coming in and asking for it, I told her it was sold out. Her reply was "really, they're not that good"

I saw them live touring the earlier albums uptil New Gold Dream. Live they were on fire, brilliant shows. I missed the next tour and then saw them just after Once Upon a Time came out. Huge venue and they were awful, bombast to the max. Kerr was wearing leggings and a big girls blouse. They crucified Dance to The Music for the encore and that was the final nail in the coffin. I love the early stuff but that's it.

Promised You A Miracle plonked in the middle makes it a brilliant 3-in-a row on the LP (right way round), even if the drum production is a bit iffy (fella from Slik? he was meant to be a good drummer, too)

Ugh, dull as dirt. Unfunky, goes nowhere... had to be there, I guess.

Promised You A Miracle was recorded at different sessions from the rest of the album. Kenny Hyslop was the drummer on just this track and appeared in a couple of videos. He also toured with them for Sons and Fascination. He is a good drummer, he was our Davids first drum tutor.

After reading this thread I went and put NGD on YouTube at work and thoroughly enjoyed it. At their best they really were enjoyable.

Interesting thoughts so far.
I know the obvious and correct answer is
New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) 1982
but these days I tend to reach for the three albums before it...
a more challenging listening, I guess.... hm

New Gold.. is a marvelous achievement, but somehow the nucleus of the group started to
crumble, three different drummers and so on

as someone wrote, the big mistake was to continue after Forbes left!
(if one should believe Wiki it is a really sad mess)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Forbes

"Derek Forbes (born 22 June 1956, Glasgow, Scotland) is a Scottish bassist, vocalist, and sometime guitarist, best known for his work with the Scottish band Simple Minds, which he joined in 1978, and recorded on their early demos and 1979 debut album, Life in a Day until shortly after their 1985 hit, "Don't You (Forget About Me)").
He was dismissed from the band, apparently due to petty jealousy, as cited by Jim Kerr, who stated that it was a regrettable mistake, prior to the release of the global success of Once Upon a Time. Forbes has claimed that he wrote on 60% of the album, yet remained uncredited. Assuming he would quickly be asked to re-join the band, no legal action was taken."

Didn't they destroy Sign O' the Times too?

They could have but it wasn't on my watch.

Considering how they sounded during the NGD-tour, Lillywhite was absolutely a shoe-in for the following album. Kerr wanted to strut and if Burchill wanted to sound less 'understated' than on the album, Sparkle made sure he could stick his chest hair out on stage too. I love the dreamy quality of NGD over the more primal synthpop but some of the classic songs for me go back to Sons & Fascination and Empires. In fact, had you thrown in the 12"-compendiums they released about 20 years ago I would have voted for them- what a collection of grand tunes and themes on them.

Yes! I do like most of their 12"es. The first door sets of these are great.
