Best ever music program on UK TV

I take it this means regular show, rather than one-off special or miniseries, such as BBC4's semi-regular documentaries (particularly the first episode of the one on electronic music). I'm glad to see a general dislike of Jools Holland and Later around here, the awkward, sweaty, interminably boogie-woogying twat. I can't remember seeing much in the way of decent music tv in my lifetime, though obviously there's clips of decent performances from The Old Grey Whistle Test, The Tube, and obscure Granada shows featuring Tony Wilson.

I did used to watch ITV's The Chart Show occasionally in my youth, because about once a month they would feature the indie chart, which was just about the only chance of hearing something different on TV, even if they only played one song (always a video), but you'd get a snippet of The Happy Flowers or something equally not pleasant.

I sometimes wonder why Jools Holland attracts such hatred. Granted, he IS sort of a dick, but he's featured quite a lot of great bands over the years and he doesn't really play boogie-woogie over all of them...

The Hogmanay show he still puts together every year is an absolute cradle of stinking shit, mind.

...seriously, series one of the White Room on Channel 4 was very good (1995: when Mark Radcliffe was the only presenter): great mix of live performances and archive clips. One show had Sparks (+Suede guitarist), Prince and Portishead live in studio, with clips of Otis Redding and Pink Floyd (Arnold Layne). It was probably the weekly best music programme I've ever watched.

Later is the only remaining music show on British TV. It does have a dreadful presenter (though I think he's got worse as the years have gone on), but it has featured a lot of great music over the years.

LIke most here i grew up with TOTP but watching reruns now is quite cringeworthy. Most of those Radio 1 DJs really were a bunch of wankers weren't they. Watching Peelie deadpanning it is still a delight though.

One everyone seems to have forgotten is Rapido. Seems everyone only remembers Antoine De Caunes for Eurototrash
