The BCB Rock 'n' Roll Cup 2017 - comments thread
Hey BCB Rock 'n' Rollers,
here's how it's going to go down -
*The Rock 'n' Roll Cup will be a song vs. song competition.
*Everyone should submit all their songs as a list at the beginning, but the competition will run in a series of rounds depending on how many people we get.
*If we end up with say 20 players, then i'll split everyone up into 2 groups, of 10 players each.
So, if you're in Group A, you'll need a list of 9 songs to play all the others in Group A once. I'll use Song number 1 from your list for the first match, song number 2 for the second match, etc.
*If you win your match in any particular round, you will get 2 points. If you and your opponent draw, you get one point each. The vote difference in each round WILL COUNT and be accumulated, and will be used to determine the final standings in each group.
*As the title suggests, the music you choose should be your interpretation of Rock 'n' Roll, Rockabilly, period R&B and Doo Wop.
Is this ok with you all?
I have added a poll to the top of this thread to see whether we should do this with just 'period' music - say late-'40s to early-'60s songs - or if more contemporary songs from these genres should be included. Please weigh in with your comments too here.
Any other questions or thoughts?

Period songs only. To do otherwise defeats the purpose of this cup.

Is that Beatles UK, Hamburg or USA? I'd vote for nothing after 1/1/64

Well, it's an interesting mix so far. All the comments have been for 'period' songs, and yet the poll shows 6 votes for allowing later songs as opposed to 4 for only 'period'.
Therefore, i'm not gonna be a dictator about this - the time frame for your song choices will remain open.
**Songs recorded after the period between the late-'40s & early-'60s CAN be entered.
However, all competitors please take note that some voters may mark them down considerably for this.

So what are the rules? What is considered a proper choice? Does it have to be rockabilly or some type of traditionalist rock and roll? What about country music a la Sun era Cash or Charlie Rich?

All of the above are fine, Velvis. Rockabilly, traditional Rock and Roll, period R&B, Doo Wop, hillbilly country - all just what we are looking for.

I was a bit worried that the ultra purist view that any music released after 1959 isn't Rock 'n' Roll might prevail. That said there's no excuse whatsoever for including The Clash's Brand new Cadillac

Doesn't matter to me. I think non-period songs are fine. Contestants picks will get voted on accordingly as contenders or pretenders.
I could've predicted Matt Wilson taking the Scalia position, strict constitutionalist.

About that, V. The final number will depend on how many people are in each group.

I'll have mine in by Wednesday, as requested. Only I like submitting lists better than songs. There's an ebb and flow to a proper list which individual songs don't have. One has to hit it out of the park with every single song to achieve the same impact. It's more difficult.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
