Status Quo 12 Gold Bars

Shoot me down and call me a porcupine but I've become obsessed with this ... first thing I play when I wake up in the mornings.

It's childhood, it's end of the pier entertainment, it's escapism, it's cool, it's fucking well produced and well played ... I've fallen in love too late

*kisses fingers*

I daren't (not yet) tell you about my other obsession ... :?

Dozens of these were just sitting on the kitchen table at my work. I might have an extra one lying around if anyone wants - PM me.

Anyway, took it 'cause it was there, you know - and 'cause I figured I had a leg up on some of the kids I work with - at least I know who they are and would actually listen to it, not just trade it in first chance (which is strictly against company policy - I've seen much evidence that it's a policy not exactly followed to the letter - anyway, I digress).

Point being, didn't expect to like it as much as I did. There's something there worth appreciating. Sometimes you just want the main course - no need for the sides.

12 Gold Bars is a great all killer greatest hits. I prefer the album versions of Mystery Song and Living on an Island and use them on my version.

side one
"Rockin' All Over the World" (John Fogerty) – 3:58
"Down Down" (Francis Rossi/Bob Young) – 4:15
"Caroline" (Rossi/Young) – 4:08
"Paper Plane" (Rossi/Young) – 3:16
"Break the Rules" (Rossi/Young/Rick Parfitt/Alan Lancaster/John Coghlan) – 4:03
"Again and Again" (Parfitt/Andy Bown/Jackie Lynton) – 4:04

Side two
"Mystery Song" (Parfitt/Young) – 4:24
"Roll Over Lay Down" (Rossi/Young/Lancaster/Parfitt/Coghlan) – 6:17
"Rain" (Parfitt) – 5:03
"Wild Side of Life" (Arlie Carter/William Warren) – 3:36
"Whatever You Want" (Parfitt/Bown) – 4:28
"Living on an Island" (Parfitt/Young) – 4:15

There's a volume 2. But it might not contain the particular 12 gold bars you think are missing from volume 1.

Side one
"What You're Proposin'" (Francis Rossi/Bernie Frost) – 4:13

"Rock 'n' Roll" (Rossi/Frost) – 4:04

Side two
"Ol' Rag Blues" (Alan Lancaster/Keith Lamb) – 2:48

"Marguerita Time" (Rossi/Frost) – 3:28
"Going Down Town Tonight" (Guy Johnson) – 3:36

Whatever You Want – The Very Best of Status Quo is a 41 track 2 CD comp. It has everything you want (bar the odd album track like Big Fat Mama and Hold You Back) though it does contain a good 15 you don't.
Edit it down to the 24 and you have:

"Pictures of Matchstick Men" (Rossi)
"Ice in the Sun" (Wilde/Scott)
"Down the Dustpipe" (Grozman)
"In My Chair" (Rossi/Young)
"Paper Plane" (Rossi/Young)
"Mean Girl" (Rossi/Young)
"Caroline" (Rossi/Young)
"Break the Rules" (Rossi/Young/Parfitt/Lancaster/Coghlan)
"Down Down" (Rossi/Young)
"Roll Over Lay Down" (Rossi/Young/Parfitt/Lancaster/Coghlan)
"Rain" (Parfitt)
"Mystery Song" (Parfitt/Young)
"Wild Side of Life" (Warren/Carter)
"Rockin' All Over the World" (Fogerty)
"Again and Again" (Parfitt/Bown/Lynton)
"Whatever You Want" (Parfitt/Bown)
"Livin' on an Island" (Parfitt/Young)
"What You're Proposin'" (Rossi/Frost)
"Lies" (Rossi/Frost)
"Don't Drive My Car" (Parfitt/Bown)
"Something 'Bout You Baby I Like" (Supa)
"Rock 'n' Roll" (Rossi/Frost)
"Ol' Rag Blues" (Lancaster/Lamb)
"Marguerita Time" (Rossi/Frost)

'course 12 Gold Bars is a Phonogram compilation and Whatever You Want is a cross label one with the Pye stuff too. Much better.

Just realised it doesnt have Accident Prone on it :x
I#d change that for Old Rag Blues.

For sure.

I like some of those early 70s albums (Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon is pretty solid) but 'Rockin' All Over The World' and 'What You're Proposin'' are really only for gormless cunts who drink cocktails and holiday in caravans.

It reminds me of my journey to school. Our mates' dad would take me and Copehead plus his two sons to school and it would often be a tape of 12 Gold Bars or Quo Live playing woozily through their Morris Marina's shit stereo. On cold mornings it would speed up and slow down with the car.

Happy days.

I'd ditch anything after the Just 'Supposin' album and, yes, would add Accident Prone. Shame there wasn't a second single from the "Quo" album, Backwater or Lonely Man for instance. Little Lady should have been a second single from On the Level come to think of it.

I never subscribed to that idea either. Heck, I like lots of Best Ofs and Greatest Hits. Sometimes, they're just the thing.

I essentially lost interest in the band with and everything after, "Rockin' All Over the World". Dreck like "Livin' On An Island" and "Marguerita Time" just compounded it for me.

That said, their run of albums from 'Dog Of Two Head' up to 'Blue For You' is cracking!

Don't think Lancaster ever got a single released with him on lead vocals. Bit of a shame, probably didn't help his cause in the long run as record company left it for Rick and Fran to front all the singles. Should've got at least one though.
