There was this crazy little venue in my hometown that had a rotating stage that must've had one of the best bookers in the world. They specialized in soul and R&B and Chuck Berry played there occasionally.

We went to see him in high school. I heard he could be ornery some nights, but he lived up to my imagination that time. My friends and I left saying, "We just saw fucking Chuck Berry."

He managed to hang around longer than most of his peers. R.I.P. to one of the architects of rock and roll. Some of his songs were the earliest rock songs I ever heard through my uncle's record collection. Chuck had a long and strange life.

True that he'd had a good innings, but because of the new album and the fact that he was still gigging (albeit sporadically), I thought he was doing OK - this comes as a bit of a shock.

Rockers don't come much greater nor more influential. Wonderful lyricist, too, of course.

Yep, one of THE great lyricists. Cars, girls and playing rock and roll were the raw materials, but the way they sounded and could make you feel ... a lot of poets would kill to be able to use words the way Chuck Berry did.

Anyway, may he RIP. Glad he stuck around as long as he did.

RIP, Mr Berry. For once the term "one of the greats" really is justified.

While never got to see him live, I was in the queue waiting to see Pink Floyd do an early version of Dark Side at a late night show at Coventry Locarno while CB performed an earlier show at the same venue as part of the 1972(?) Lanchester Arts Festival. It was the night CB recorded most of the live songs for what eventually became the London Sessions. One of the tinny songs me and my mates heard coming through the walls high above us that night was the that totally uncharacteristic career albatross My Ding a Ling.

Poetic genius.

No one person invented rock 'n' roll, but Chuck was the distillery the final product came through. Chuck was the ORIGINAL badass guitar player and his words painted vivid pictures like no one else.

RIP to a true legend.

Probably the greatest lyricist in modern music in many ways - I look back at things like "Too Much Monkey Business" and think that no one was writing in that style at the time. For that alone, he's a colossus.

The music is, quite possibly, the true kernel of all rock music that followed since. Others undoubtedly received greater fame but no one influenced more.

RIP Chuck - you're one of the few for which the term 'genius' really isn't hyperbole.
