Aphex Twin aye or nay?
He/They are headlining at Fuji Rock this summer.
What I have heard so far sounds like a lot of noise rather than music (yes, I sound like my dad), and as a side act at the festival I wouldn't mind but headlining??? I vote nay.

Why? An act I think of as worthless codswallop is topping the bill at a major festival I'm hoping more of you will agree with my opinion. So far … not.

Re: Aphex Twin aye or nay?
never cared much for his music
although I can understand why some do
I need more of a human touch to the electronic stuff
but he is good at what he does

Exactly what i can't understand. With so many talented musicians making melodic music, a guy who mimics a garbage truck crusher or wood chipper is not fun nor entertaining.

The Ambient records I love. I have a few of his other works but they are easier to admire than love.

Thanks Conny for playing for me the softer edged and very repetitive music of which the best I can say it might be fine as movie background music or played in a yoga class but it would just bore me to tears having to stand out on the festival ground. The grungier and more pointless tune was this one which I pulled at random when i was researching.

Aye. I'm not a massive fan, but I like plenty of his stuff enough. I don't get why he couldn't headline a major festival though, there's not many bigger names in music.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

There's plenty of melody in many of his songs.

Yeah, there are notes and music, I guess, but from what I've heard this type of music is what iTunes images is to art. Call me old fashioned but give me a tune with singer and a guitar solo over this synthy crap any day of the year.

Re: Aphex Twin aye or nay?
I'll say a lower case "yea"
I like "crappy synth stuff"- always have. I think it's great that someone with certain equipment can get their musical ideas out of their heads & into your ears as directly as they can. I might agree that sometimes this can make for something a little bloodless but it can also make for something very rich. With proper planning & skill you can get both.
One thing about that stuff is the shelf life. I don't pretend to be consistent but I know what I like. Some of that ARP & Olberheim stuff from the 70's still sounds pretty fresh. Some of it sounds horribly dated. Much of it, with God as my witness, manages to do both.
I like Aphex Twin well enough. It's good music for making model airplanes. It requires as much attention as you wish to apply to it.

Yeah, it does have that zhwaang zhwaang glue/nitrous huffy vibe. Lemme dig out that old tin of wood glue and give Aphex Twin another shot.

Well he's not exactly Ed Sheeran.
