Both shows from Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 11 December 1980. I was at the early show. According to the liner notes on Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar Some More, Soup 'n Old Clothes was recorded this night, but I don't hear it anywhere. But that's okay - the late show opener, Chunga's Revenge, has some gloriously brutal guitaring. One thing I remember was that Frank started at 7.30pm on the dot, and for the first few minutes half the audience came running in from the lobby, thinking that a start time of 7.30 meant it would probably start 10 or 15 minutes later. Nope. Late show is from the soundboard.

A long video (I've only watched half of it) - a conversation between Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson, Ralph Humphrey, and the delightful Ruth Underwood, about their experiences playing in Zappa's various bands. They play together a bit, too.

Only a few days away from Meat Light 8-)

Thirty-odd quid though. And no bonus dialogue tracks. FFS!

I'm hoping the prices come down.

The Lumpy Money set is only £20 now, having been a steal at £50 before.

They should have included the film as a bonus dvd, shit as it is. Watched it once. The vhs is up for grabs if anyone is keen. Mebbe I'd throw in the no-d glasses too. Yours for the price of postage.

So, how 'bout that Meat Light, hey?

So far I've listened to Parts 1 & 2 of the "Original Sequence" (i.e., two-thirds of Disc 2). I'm enjoying it (I usually enjoy hearing "alternate" versions of loved albums), but so far I can't help but think FZ made all the right choices with his as-released sequence (and not just because it's more familiar to me). I'd love to know more about this, though - like when it was compiled, relative to the final master tapes; where/when some of the "new tracks" were recorded (this goes for the From The Vault stuff on Disc 3, too); whether there was ever an actual master compiled for the triple-LP version (No Commercial Potential) that FZ talked about in his '68 Rolling Stone interview... The booklet is a bit skimpy on such specifics, compared with past "Project/Object Audio Documentaries".

And ANOTHER thing...

They've finally given us the Uncle Meat we all know and love on ONE disc... yay! So why didn't they do the same for the aforementioned "Original Sequence"? Yes, they could have (I just burned myself a CD-R). I'd like to think that it's a sly jokey reference to the "old" Uncle Meat CD (Sides 1 - 3 on Disc One, Side 4 and "vault stuff" on Disc 2), but even that would be no excuse.

Man - the "From The Vault" items on Disc 3 are where the real fun is. No penalty trackage here!

OK, I've absorbed the Meat Light set over the last few days and I realize I enjoy Uncle Meat more than Hot Rats. It's almost as good as Freak Out, and better than Absolutely Free. I like how all of "King Kong" is finally on one track (on disc two). They could've used better liner notes though. We finally have the original LP mix on CD as well.

Sounds great - I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit.

£18.50 plus p&p at the moment
