Re: Soft Machine Triple Echo booklet autograph project
Latest news: Bill Bruford and Phil Manzanera will do it! Phil will be seeing Bill MacCormick later this month, so he'll hold onto the booklet until then. Wyatt is likely a goer as well. A few other names came up, but I'll save those until they're more definite. Thank you Heather!

Well, if Charles Hayward is playing with This Heat again, at least he's still around.
After this thing circulates around the UK as much as it can, it's going off to Dave Sinclair in Japan, and he'll send it back to me. This booklet will end up traveling across the world, which is more than I ever did!

Around and still on touch with MacCormick. They post on each other's pages, I seem to recall.

Latest news: a bit of a holdup with Phil, as he was out of town for a while, but no problem. At least it was being kept safe and sound, which is most appreciated. Thank you, Phil! And again, thanks to Heather Sinclair, who is taking time from her monthly visits to London from Italy for family business to make contacts and put the word out. This wouldn't be gaining nearly the traction it is gaining without her help. So as far as I know, here are the latest additions:
Judy Dyble
Dave Stewart
Mont Campbell
Bill Bruford (?)
Phil Manzanera
Bill MacCormick
It's now on its way to Robert Wyatt, then Carol Grimes, then Jimmy Hastings. Various other folks are being contacted along the way (e.g. Jan Schelhaas, Graham Flight), and hopefully those leads will result in other leads. It seems that the one person who has cut off all contact with his past is Mike Ratledge, but that's no surprise, as he was always a very private person. Richard Sinclair told me that Mike's father was one of his schoolteachers, but he can't recall one single conversation he ever had with Mike, even in the '60s when their bands used to do gigs together. Would be nice to get him involved (I now have all four Hatfields, five if we include Dave Sinclair's impending addition, too bad I won't get all four original Softs). Oh well - whatever he's doing, best wishes to him.
From what I hear, everyone is getting a real kick out of it. The more names get added to it, the more other people love adding to it. Sounds like everyone's having fun with this! Besides getting the booklet eventually returned to me, I'm looking forward to hearing if any of these people have been inspired to reconnect after all these years - if not musically, then just for a few beers and a few laughs. That would be extremely gratifying.

Thanks! If you go directly to the image url - https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/QBSd3 ... 08-h404-no - you can enlarge it from there. I haven't seen it with the most recent additions yet, but I'll add a new scan when it makes it way back to me.

That's odd - I can, and it's not stored on my computer. Try clicking on the original post and copying the image url (or "open image in new tab" or whatever command pertains to your computer layout), see that that does it.
One name that surprised me was Graham Flight, the Wilde Flowers singer, who's ready to join in. We're talking 1963, some serious history going on here!

Zoomy: So far, no response from my FB "friend" Charles Hayward. I mentioned it to my other FB "friend" Bill McCormick to contact CH, and he didn't respond either.

Thanks for trying. This is what I meant about chances being better if someone they know personally asks them, rather than someone they don't know. I've had a few strokes of luck along the way, but I didn't expect we'd be batting 1.000. It was worth a shot, though, I appreciate it.

But it's funny: Bill MacCormick signs it, Phil Manzanera signs it ... you'd think they would call Dave and Charles, right?

Re: Soft Machine Triple Echo booklet autograph project
I found out that Mike Wedgwood is alive and well and running a studio in Denmark. I sent him a link to this thread, and he's ready to join the party! We've had a couple nice e-mail exchanges along the way. I've been going through my 93-year-old aunt's cd collection and reorganizing it for her. My cousin and I have given her loads of compilations over the years, and I'd forgotten some of the ones I made, so it was fun seeing them again. There were a couple Caravan discs, so I put one on while doing this. I didn't look at the track listing, as it was fun to be surprised, plus I trusted myself to pick the good ones. The disc ended on a majestic note with The Show Of Our Lives, which I haven't heard in a while, and it was a pretty emotional moment. My aunt was sitting next to the cd player, and when this song came on, she cranked up the volume. She may be 93, but she's still sharp, and she knows a good tune when she hears one! He sang that one so well, I had to let him know about this. Very nice man, glad that he's doing well.

It might be worth getting in touch with Jonathan Coe (he's on Twitter).

Re: Soft Machine Triple Echo booklet autograph project
Ah yes - he's the one who wrote a novel titled after a Hatfield And The North album. Excellent tip, thank you!
(ten minutes later...) No luck. I signed up to twitter just to contact him, but there doesn't seem to be a way to send him a direct message (probably by his own choice). Same with his website. So it goes. But thanks for planting the seed, I'll mention him to the various musicians I contact, maybe they'll know. Who knows, he may find it worth writing an article about, besides knowing where to find some of the more obscure or low-profile players.
