The more rare things are the harder they are to understand and accept.

My trans friend tells me "they" is fine to use even in the singular, to refer to someone who is transitioning. Although my inner grammarian rebels, I go along.

Only appropriate if there's multiple personality disorder thrown in!

But really, I read about that a few weeks ago and realized I'm transitioning into being an old man. The world has officially passed me by.

yes. none of this stuff is coming out of a social vacuum.

if i hafta choose between two sides..

i am only what i think i am

vs

i am only what i am according to my chromosomal config at birth or what was imprinted on me in the cradle, etc

... my easy answer would be, yes, i am what i think i am.

but i also don't think the development of a person's identity is as simplified as those two sides. it is a complex mix of factors that humans navigate through and deal with all their life. as i said, it's not a vacuum. socialization is integral.

then again, i had many people in my life trying to tell me what i wasn't, even though i knew i was.

in my case, i was right, mwhahaha.

Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his ...

What? His? What is this "his?"

Uh, broke they're crown?

And I guess Jill came tumbling after. The end.

Speaking of choosing identities: I choose every day not to be an old man. I try to be flexible and keep up with the new ideas. I have something of the curmudgeon in me, but I try as best I can to go against that.

Tonight while out and about I was reminded that here in Japan the public rest room cleaners are mostly women. Tonight at the train station there was a bank of men lined up at urinals and a lady in a janitor's uniform squatting down before a urinal scrubbing it out. In N. Carolina the men would scream and run out. I even noticed the heavy plastic sign they placed by the bathroom door indicating it was being cleaned pictured a female cleaner in an apologetic pose. No one makes a fuss because that is what we are used to here. If the cleaner were a man cleaning the ladies room, well, one doesn't see that.

So women are now expected to touch a penis against their wishes if the owner of one declares themself a woman?

Unbelievable.

I have a friend who transitioned to female circa 1980 (I don't know the exact date) who married a man but that lasted a few years and then she switched and started a relationship with a woman. They have been together about thirty years and her partner recently transitioned to a male and they are still happily married! :D Anything is possible today.
