Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
whom do you prefer?
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Sly Stone equals Beefheart in the BCB sacred cow stakes.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Yes, but I can see how Beefheart can be off-putting. I don't understand not loving Sly, and that's the honest-to-god truth. One of the major musical acts of the last half-century.
Wish he'd had Zappa's attitude toward drugs, mind you- who knows what great stuff he might have done?

I see Carlsson's aliases have already voted.

He's not the only Zappa fan around here though.
Sly was truly great for a few years there, and Stand! & There's a Riot Goin' On are classics. Fresh is pretty good too. After that it's a matter of songs, not LPs in my opinion.
Frank has probably a half dozen or so great albums, and dozens of great tracks which aren't necessarily on great LPs. So it's a matter of quantity here if you're a fan of both artists as I am.
Zappa, it is.

Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
Zappa as a solo artist is supremely, stunningly bad. His whole catalogue is one crime against music after another - self-indulgent buffoonery that appeals only to the shallow and the tasteless.
No man should ever be allowed that much creative freedom - and funds - again.

The question of funds is probably what we should be thinking about Frank Zappa for. With not a lot of help from his label, he was able to get a lot of big projects done -- and done his way. He would make money on albums and touring, then sink it all into these things, like films, symphony orchestras, recording and film editing studios, and of course having the finest musicians on his payroll. Would that more people were inspired by this aspect of him.
His actual music is another thing, a very strong flavor, and where I can love one thing of his (generally in the early Mothers era), I can hate another just as much.

I see what you mean, but the way he took these huge talents and used them to make this - if I'm generous, let's call it unique - music....I don't see there's anything there to praise. It just looks like a waste.
you separated the music from the method but I can't do that!

It's kinda depressing for a music forum to be proud of not knowing musicians.

Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
I spend a lot more time and money on Zappa but I'm leaning towards Sly.
Sly and the Family Stone, in some small way, really did make the world seem like a better place.
I know it sounds corny but the visual impact of them alone, even not factoring in the songs was really quite bracing in those days. Also, some of those songs really do go to the best part of the listener. I'm a huge Zappa fan but Zappa (especially as he went along) didn't seem especially fond of his fellow human beings. Sly's best stuff has something like joy in it.

I prefer Sly Stone by some margin, thanks.

I'm afraid you're too late. Possibly for both of them.

Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
with Zappa i like one, maybe two songs only, bobby brown, valley girl
i wonder why he didn't write more hits when he clearly had the ability and talent
but he preferred to be an ironic superstar and alienate the masses
sly stone, who doesn't like him? he crossed over to the rock market like nobody's business
people who aren't into soul always seem to have some affection for sly

Re: Frank Zappa vs. Sly Stone
Nothing against Sly, but Zappa's talent exceeds by some margin.
He made a lot of different music, with a lot of different lineups, over a longer period of time. Some of the material is stronger than others. Only a small amount doesn't appeal to me.
Only Miles ranks as a serious contender for 'American Musician of the 20th Century'
