I'm a freelance English-language teacher and I don't make much money, but I sometimes enjoy my job. It depends on the day you ask.

Teaching does play to my strengths and I'm pretty good at it these days. I've been getting some very positive feedback over the last year or two. It's easy to do a 'standard' job in teaching - open the book, do the exercises, check the answers - and it's actually very difficult to keep a classroom of disparate characters challenged and engaged for 90 minutes. There are days when I just can't be fucked, and clearly the students feel the same way, and you walk out thinking 'what IS the point?'. And I'd like to say that doesn't happen often...

I also do teacher training which, generally speaking, is more rewarding work than classroom teaching. It's enjoyable to watch inexperienced teachers find out what works in front of a bunch of students. It's easy to help them, too - they're clean slates and you can draw on your years of experience. And they're invariably appreciative.

What I've been reminded of lately is that I don't enjoy one-to-one teaching. You get business types in their offices who just wank on about their jobs, and you have to listen and correct their errors. It's tedious. I'm going to stop doing it next year.

Very important. I had a meeting this afternoon with a new client, a developer who's firing their current architect. It definitely played to my strengths and was very satisfying (after two years of dealing with a wishy-washy development group and bureaucratic review agencies). It's kind of a no-lose situation. Our team has a head for solving knotty construction issues... we ride in on the white horse and any extra effort that we make is viewed as heroic. After 45-minutes we probably had a better understanding of the problems at hand than the hipster firm that's been delivering unbuildable architorture for the past 16-months.

We were contacted about the project last Wednesday, we had an interview on Friday and a kick-off meeting today... incredibly refreshing.

Is there a way to do that full-time? Sounds like the kind of position that always is in high demand.

I did it full time for five years and loved it - best job I ever had.

Basically the positions are there as long as there are young Americans ('cos they make up the bulk of the trainees) who are interested in coming to Prague to try their hand at teaching English. Most don't stick it out for long, to be honest. They piss around for a year, have a good time drinking cheap beer and shagging the locals and giving so-so lessons, then they head back to Portland or Connecticut or Rhode Island or San Francisco. I don't blame 'em, really.

There are too many places now in Prague offering these courses, however. We might get five trainees on the next course, which starts in a couple of weeks.

I love my colleagues and I love pay day. i even believe in what we do. but I hate the organisation which subcontracts the contract to us which we work on... they make everything utterly miserable with their obsession with compliance and wildly over ambitious targets and they suck the joy out of every achievement and any success which we have. it wears me out and it brings me down.

Well if you will sub-contract for the Conservative Party…

I loathe, detest and abhor mine.

I was grateful for it at the outset as it kept me in the habit of work in the wake of the collapse of my own business. It put food on the table and saw me through the period of my bankruptcy. But it was never meant to be anything other than a short term fix - never an eleven year slog.

The work is intellectually undemanding. Actually, it is brain crippling. It is physically demanding which is good as I don't do any formal exercise. I work only nights so the hours are crap and the pay is woeful (less than £9ph). The company has loved every minute since the financial crises all kicked off some years back as circumstances have allowed them to behave like 19th century mill owners, playing on peoples' fears and squeezing the workers like any other good Stalinists.

I never foresaw the later portion of my working life being spent in these circumstances but at 62, it's probably too late to get out now. I have made efforts to extricate myself over the years but, as they say, there's not much out there and I have never really known what I wanted to be when I grew up.

On the plus side, I do have a good laugh with some truly splendid workmates (some idiots, too, of course).
Grab your coat sweetheart....I've got a knife.

I was working on Jobseekers Allowance and quite happy, then they told me I train to do Universal Credit as of next week. I will not comment further.
The world was holding its breath waiting for me to post that, obviously......

I've been doing the same job since 1996. That may not have proved too smart a move in terms of career (or salary) progression, but I must love it to do that. At the moment, I would readily leave and do something I like less for (far) more money, but as long as I am permitted to do my current job I am happy to.

I can't even get a full-time job. I've had two rejections from job interviews just this week, so be thankful for what you've got. I doubt I'll ever have any kind of meaningful career again.

That's shitsville Geraint. Sorry.

However, if you ever want to resurrect that conversation about you writing about film rather than teaching...

My job is shit, but it's now the only job I can think of, that I can actually do. Over the last nine or so years, I've had a variety of drugs for neuralgia, most make me incredibly tired, and affect my ability to concentrate.
My routine is - I open the shop, turn on the heater and the computer, then go to sleep until my first customer. After that, another sleep until my next customer then alternate between that and Facebook. Around lunchtime, I'll make a start on whatever computer stuff I have to do, after a while I find I'm wool gathering so I check in on Facebook for a while. I'll work around variations of this until closing time. Now that I have my bus pass (Thank you, our SNP government) I go by bus, I nap on the way to work and nap on my way home.
At least I earn enough that I no longer have to do solo gigs to pay bills.

I have a love hate relationship with my job. I've been at the same firm for 25+ years.
The good -
1. free to come and go - set my hours.
2. My boss leaves me alone as long as my division I run bills enough which it has for over 10 + years.
3. My boss is a nice guy who I could be friends with if he wasn't the owner.
4. My job continues to change so it keeps it interesting.

The bad
1. Because I've liked my job I've not jumped from company to company which in turn makes for higher salary. I get paid a good wage but should make more if we had more drive.
2. My boss is starting to get cheap and our systems are becoming out of date.
3. My employees I'm sick of them, I've had the same two assistants for the past 10+ years and I'm sick of them them.
4. I've been trying for years to turn a hobby into a full time job or part-time jump to offset my work income. It has gone well

I love my last job because I am my own boss and have my own consultancy company.

I am quasi-retired now and do about half a day a week.

In fact I loved my whole career: secondary mathematics teacher, head of faculty, senior teacher, adviser, inspector, regional director for government Dept of Education initiative and then own boss - education adviser/consultant

I even enjoyed the stuff I did for four years before all of that - insurance, banking, van driver, packer, engineering labourer.

All of that kept me busy

Likewise.

I have two close friends who have burnt out from British secondary school teaching including that most rare of teachers, one who taught physics up to A level. They were so desperate to keep her, a pay rise was even mooted but that wasn't enough to compensate for the grief and vexation.

Looking back on my original post it seems I really hated my job. Funny, I hadn't realized how much I hated it. It was actually a pretty sweet gig. Must have caught myself on a bad day. But it can't compare with retirement. 8-)
