Olympics Opening Ceremony Thread
Are we going to do this, or am I the only one that's going to watch this?
Re: Olympics Opening Ceremony Thread
Yes I was going to start a sync watch thread, but it doesn't start till about 9 does it?
I was going to do it in NDL where it will see much more action -and it's not really a sporting event so it might as well go there.
I'll move this one over there instead .

Re: Olympics Opening Ceremony Thread
I still feel ambivalent about the whole thing, given the amount of corruption and scandal that has dogged the Olympic movement during its inglorious history. And this event has made me once more realise that Britain can be a deeply crap nation - the way the overall bill for this farrago has mushroomed, the whole fiasco around ticketing meaning that most events will play to half-empty arenas, and the appalling security shambles. Plus, on the first day of the competition, we managed to cause an embarrassing diplomatic situation when the North Koreans walked off a football field after they were represented by the South Korean flag. And don't get me started on Boris Johnson. Welcome to the land of omnishambles....
On the other hand, there's at least likely to be some decent sport somewhere among the chaos, and I should try to get some enjoyment out of this economically ruinous charade. So, I will watch tonight, and join in even though I'm expecting uncomfortable echoes of that Brit Awards ceremony with Sam Fox and Mick Fleetwood.
OK, rant over. Let the games begin!

Did you see the Pankhursts just now?
Also: undecided whether I should be pleased that women's boxing is now allowed at the Olympics.

I'm now watching the pre-show with the volume off, and a personal soundtrack of Bowie playing in the background. It's more fun that way; I've just seen shots of a flock of sheep interspersed with John McEnroe talking. I'm pleased I don't understand the context of this puzzling juxtaposition.

Well that would be fun!
But I think Danny Boyle was an interesting choice and say what you like Britain but we can be pretty creative, so I'm hoping it'll be a good spectacle.

'Outside' - decent if overlong album. But I've now set my iPod on shuffle.

Absolutely no interest, sorry!
I think it's because I can't stand the televised coverage, with all the interruptions and advertising. Plus I don't have TV reception anyway.
I'm happy as a clam to watch people go nuts doing gymnastics and stuff though.

Actually, G, Boyle seems like a canny choice. As a film director, he's proved he can create entertainments with the common touch which don't offend the audience's intelligence. And Trainspotting proved he knows a good soundtrack when he hears one. Unfortunately, initial reports suggest he'll completely ignore metal, the one enduring rock genre that Britain gave the world, but you can't have everything!

BBC, mate. No adverts. Obviously they're all communists, like the rest of us Europeans.

You're making it sound like a Carry On film directed by Ken Russell...which, on second thought might not be a bad thing.

Re: Olympics Opening Ceremony Thread
Olympics TV coverage is like reality tv or the pages of Vanity Fair.
every body has to have a fucking back story!
I wouldn't be surprised if the athletes were pre-screened to insure that they had inspiring tales of courage to tell before, during & after each event.
gag.

Perhaps I was thinking of Blur's Country House video.

Is anybody able to digitally record this and bung it on a DVD?
I get the feeling that there might be a lot going on that would necessitate further viewings.
