Incorrect Free Space showing

Postby The Dríver » 28 Jan 2012, 16:28

In Windows Explorer I am suddenly getting the amount of free disk space reported incorrectly.

I've been going through my PC securely deleting a load of unused files as I had less than 10% of the hard drive free. I must have deleted close on 20GB worth of data but now Windows is reporting that I only have 1.4GB out of 220GB free. How can this be?

The recycle bin is empty and, as I say, I have just deleted 20GB worth of junk.

This is Vista Home Basic edition

That is probably the cache acting like the Blob!

Firstly, and not to teach you to suck eggs, I do assume the items are deleted, rather than in the recycle bin (I had to ask!)

Try a reboot (shut down and restart) and it should be better. That said, Vista really is a piece of shit and somrthing else may have done something (although not too likely)

All the obvious done. Made no difference.

Restarted. Made no difference.

Defragged. Made no difference.

Shut down completely then switch on. Made no difference.

Left it on for 90 minutes whilst doing something else. 50.8 GB free.

Go figure.

Hi John

Looked into this a bit more as my knowledge of Vista is (intentionally) pretty limited.

One commonly referred to issue with this OS is apparently thsat the System Restore function can gobble up space. Have a look here and give this a try. It may be a solution?

Good luck.

If I get a chance I'll see if any other solutions pop up and let you know.

Thanks, though as you can see above it does seem to have magically sorted itself out.

In that case this may indeed be the culprit - somewhere I read that the std system can do this and need a couple of reboots to correct. Maybe have a look at limiting the size of the system restore function to a sensible limit may help against this in future? Probably about 5% of disc size should be (more than) enough.

And apologies for calling you John previously Andrew - I obviously have early dementia, 'cos I was sure this was a Slider post. (Next up: How I wore my wife's clothes for work cause I was sure they were mine  )
