Being Welsh, you get a wealth of options for name variations when your name is David George. The David bit gets you Dave, Davey, Dewi, Daf and Dai; George gives rise to Georgie and, disgracefully, Georgie Porgie (fortunately, perhaps because it's more of a first name than a surname, people don't tend to fixate on the latter half of my name).

And yet at the age of 10 I got lumbered with a nickname that had precious little to do with my name, precious little to do with anything, and which I hated. And because it was given me by my best mate in junior school, it stuck and I never really had a way of protesting as, y'know, it's what your best mate calls you. Even when we went to different comps, it followed me via other people, all the way up to the age of 18. It was a real pleasure to go to uni and introduce myself as David; I let everyone else come up with their own short forms and, weirdly, Daf (pronounced, in error, with a soft F) rose to the top of the pile 'cos I was Welsh.

But around the same time a few friends of mine from home, sensing that I wasn't too keen on the original nickname, started calling me Dai. I liked it more than any other name I'd had. At the same time I got a poem in a magazine and I spoke with Roddy and we agreed that Dai George had more punch (a spondee!) than David George, and thus it stuck. I took it out to America, and I could be nothing else to all my American friends. I'm known as that among writers and quite a few other friends these days...

... including a good many BCB-ers. But this long-winded progress from David to Dai has taken place across the same time that I've been a member here, so some people have mentioned that they feel a bit confused what to call me these days. The short answer is that I don't mind - lots of people I'm very fond of (my girlfriend and my parents, for instance) still call me David. But Dai's good too.

In what depths of drunkenness did I let on about that? Was tequila involved?

I don't actually recall. The odds are in favor of tequila, though!

I can live with "Tobes" or "Tobester" IF they know me.

However, if anyone calls me "T", they will get an axe in the face.
