Pies v. Cupcakes

Postby Nolamike » 18 Nov 2010, 17:47

So, pies are apparently poised to take over from cupcakes as the "hip" dessert treat for those in the know, at least based on this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/17/dining/17pies.html?src=me&ref=homepage

Which do you prefer, and why?

I don't get this craze for cupcakes. There's much nicer cakes out there. I think people just like the colours.

pies are a lost art

to do them well takes time which means money

people don't like expensive baked goods

cupcakes were a cheap novelty that could be done badly and cheaply bastardizing the succcess of Sprinkles

Whoa, before cupcakes get completely bashed, there are some great ones out there. My wife makes delicious, boozy tres leches cupcakes, for example. They aren't all cheap and crappy.

That being said, pie clearly gets my vote. You just can't beat that mixture of flaky, fatty crust and fresh fruit, especially when still warm from the oven, and served with a scoop of ice cream.

Whichever one is less hip - because they'll be cheaper to buy by the dozen that way!

Since when were they "cupcakes" anyway? In the US, yes but over here they're "fairycakes", and always have been.

Regardless, they're too dry, eat the top and you're done with the good stuff. Give me pie any day.

unfortunately, that is why they became a trend

bulk box mixes yield little flavor but many cupcakes, hence the cheap sweet icing

thus a trend for the untalented

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I'm not talking about box mix cupcakes v. homemade, fresh pies here. I'm talking cupcakes made from scratch, with homemade icing, with some creative flavor combos (essentially, like they sell in all of those cupcake boutiques that have popped up in every American city) v. homemade, fresh pies.

If you wanna talk about shitty box-mix cupcakes, then the comparable pies would be those lame frozen ones from the grocery store.

nolamike,

I am sure your cupcakes are great. I am just talking about what the trend was based on.

Actually the cupcakes were/are emblematic of our time, all shimmer and no content.

I don't think the trend was based on those mixes, though. For example, here in New Orleans, we have at least two small bakeries whose whole focus is cupcakes. They are really into sourcing local products, they use high quality chocolate, etc., and make everything from scratch. If you go to New York or LA, you'll find dozens and dozens of places like that - that's the cupcake trend I was getting at, more so than the standard box mix thing.

But yeah, the wife's cupcakes are great - though not quite as great as her pies. :D

The cupcake trend is fucking asinine and emblematic of the recent sad reign of the infantile hipster jet set. Down with this sort of thing.

The cupcake trend is freaking annoying, and it stinks that pies may be next on the hipster radar. But a good cupcake is a nice treat - although I'd rather just have a slice of a regular old full-size cake.

Hey Baron - you ever been to Wimberley? They've got a great old school pie shop there - pretty much all they sell is pie (it's generally meant to take home - I don't think they even sell coffee!). It's fantastic.

This quote from the "contact us" page sums up the place pretty well:

After numerous extended periods of total cyber meltdown, we have happily discovered a higher quality of life without e-mail. We also do not accept orders from the web site since e-mail is very unreliable for us and because we do not have e-mail capability inside the bakery--I have to do everything from home. Therefore, if you have questions for us you are welcome to write but your e-mails may not be seen for a week or more. Sorry for the inconvenience but I highly recommend the higher quality of life part!

Cupcakes because they make people happy!
Tony made this for me for my birthday.

In fact I'm just getting ready to whip up a batch of double chocolate cupcakes.
When the hipsters have long moved on to the next big thing I will still be championing the tasty little bites of heaven. Not that I have anything against a good slice of pie.
