Macca

Lennon is the cool one. Macca for the tunes, both with Beatles and beyond, edges it for me.

That's a really hard one.

My heart says Lennon, but I suspect that if I went through their stuff taking notes, it'd be Macca.

I prefer him as a vocalist and I find his songs (generalising somewhat) less 'poppy' than Paul's. You know, edgier, a bit more personal and from the heart.

As a character, I prefer what I see as more rock star than pop star and I find Paul guiltyish of the latter. I like his sarcasm and his wit in general.

If I were to pick ten favourite Beatles tracks about 2/3rds would be John so it's gotta be LENNON.

I wish we could pick the combination of both. Separately both have made some fantastic and some really crap music. Together they were something else.

I pick Paul with my head and John with my heart.

McCartney. I like what he's done solo, and have found that I narrowly prefer his songs to Lennon's in the Beatle's discog.

just what I was thinking.

Anyway, I assumed we all knew you needed both, as one without the other would be, well, a bit like a cross between London Town and Mind Games.

Not just later stuff either. Huge swathes of his solo output are terrible. All of Some Time In NYC, all bar the title song of Mind Games, large chunks of Rock'n'Roll, Walls & Bridges, parts of Double Fantsasy, most of Milk & Honey...

I don't think it's as bad as all that, but I will agree that Lennon's solo stuff isn't as consistently good as McCartney's. I think Lennon kinda lost focus and energy while McCartney is a music lifer. As much as some folks here wish he'd give it up, the guy just can't stop playing or writing songs.

While I love Lennon's early songwriting bravery and putting himself out there in them, if you really put a gun to my head, I'd have to choose McCartney over the long haul. If you stopped at '66, it would be Lennon, but we're talking lifetime achievement here.

Ditto.

I've always been a Lennon guy, but most of the last 20 years or so, I've been tripping on McCartney's greatness.

Anyway, it is hard. Two of the greatest.
