That's one that grew on me over time, but I pretty much love it now. It's a vibe record - you don't listen to it for the songwriting*, but for the freaky mood of it.

Yeah, definitely. It's been growing on me. I really legitimately like some of the songs on their own, of course.

When you cue up "Whole Lotta Peace Of Mind," you'll be reminded of the psych fiddles immediately. They reappear. I really like that tune, actually. It would be great if they used the same fiddle track for other stuff!

I think that Matt wasn't saying that Doug was "trying to be a hippie," but that he was trying it far away from home - and that sense of uprootedness, of being a stranger in a strange land, is all over this record, and the next two, too.

Yeah, it's one of about three consistent themes that he mines over and over again. I can relate, though I would've been so lucky to have been far away from home in Mill Valley or wherever.

"So Doug called a few days later and said, 'Bring your Vox and come to the Blue Note.' I did. A few weeks later, he wrote a song about a couple that used to dance there, called 'She's a Body Mover.' They said you can't put it out; it was too risqué.

"It was late '64. We changed it to 'She's About a Mover.'"

I'm not keen on some of the production (well, some of the guitar sounds) but it's got some classic Sahm jams! I need it for the Gene Thomas medley alone . . .
It would be absolutely necessary for a Doug Sahm compilation, and is a pretty good little record to boot.

I've seen the album many times over the years but I've never heard it. Thanks for the great article from the A.Chronicle on Augie. I like the look of that adioslounge blog too. Now I'm in the mood for some Sahm.

I saw it at the local record shop and figured since I didn't own any Sir Doug this might be a good starting place. So it was pretty much a blind buy on my part even though I was familiar with a few of the songs. It hasn't been far from my stereo since. I knew they were good. Just not THAT good! My most welcome pick-up of the year so far and I'd advise anyone curious about the SDQ to jump on this right away. The sound quality is excellent too.

But yeah, I've been playing this a lot.

Jeff, you should check out the two on Sundazed - The Best Of The Sir Douglas Quintet (their first album! Makes you wonder why everybody doesn't start with a Best Of) and The Sir Douglas Quintet Is Back (more stuff from the same period). [edit: I temporarily forgot that this singles collection is on Sundazed, also.] They're about equally good and, last I knew, Sundazed was selling the latter real cheap on their website...

Playing it again which is beginning to turn into a daily habit for me. I think the one thing that sticks out the most is just how good a singer Sahm really was. You never see him mentioned whenever there's a discussion about great vocalists but he was right up there with the best. Also, how fantastic is At the Crossroads?
