my way of giving: rod stewart vs the small faces

Postby Bungo the Mungo » 13 Jan 2009, 13:56

one of my favourite small faces songs.

i remember when i first heard stewart's version i was not too impressed, but today it came up on shuffle and blew me away. stewart's vocals are no match for marriott's, but i really like the arrangement.

what say you?

another opportunity for some BCB revisionism?

Rod is no match for Marriott but then very few people are. The Small Faces version all the way.

What is it about Marriott? He's a bellower. And he talked all the time like a London loudmouth cunt.

Rubbish, the both of them. They did much much better.

And what's wrong with being a London loudmouth cunt anyway, they're some of my favourite people! :)

Yeah it's The Small Faces of course, they just give it more somehow..squeezing the last pip of emotion out of the track.
I'm surprised Immediate never tried this one with PP Arnold who did a number of their tracks of course. It would've suited her style. Instead they gave it to Chris Farlowe.

Anyway John how can you not be charmed by the man, he just has that zest for life.
I love the way he tells this story (about 6 minutes in)..I'll try and provide subtitles later for the American posters. :D

Nah. This is where I part ways quite sharply from yourself and Adam, G. Marriott's OK, but really I can't be fucked with those kinds of people usually. It's a bit of a North/South thing, perhaps.

I really can't get with that singing style of his, anyway. I heard some Humble Pie a while back and I had to rush to the 'off' switch on my hi-fi. Awful. What was his problem? were his knackers on fire?

I like that clip a lot. Before I saw it on Youtube I had never really heard Marriott speak--and he was an absolute charmer here. Made me wish I could've bought him a pint or two.
Still miss that guy.

btw, Small Faces, hands down.

sorry G, but it's a bridge too far.

first the monks and now this.

let's nip it in the bud before any more madness ensues.

A rather drab song. Even Marriott seems unmoved by it. Small faces by numbers???

Still, stevie's hair looks godd I suspect.... :|

I saw him a couple of times in the eighties, when he was down on his luck, and he would not fit your idea of a prototype mod in any way. No Adam, I was talking about his modified Mullet in the pop video... :D

i'm not as young as i look, mikel. i also caught him in his packet of three days. he was a regular fixture down at the fox in palmers green, a far cry from your hangouts in the kings road. he gave the standards a breath of fresh air, but it was the small faces songs which stole the show.

I'm falling in line with solarskope here, Steve Marriott has become one of my favs over the past few years and I can't choose Rod over him as far as the Small Faces stuff is concerned. Humble Pie may be different; I have yet to give them a spin. (I do think it's interesting your interpretation of London acts is much like mine with NY acts.)

Good stuff.

"You must have some stories about your gigs in the States, some of the far-flung places."

"Oh yeah there's some far-flung places all right. So in New Zealand..."

Not very good and indeed, rather dull, with totally predictable Small Faces trademarks. No, for Steve Marriott, this is the way to go:
