Let BCB take you out of your comfort zone..
An idea which we have done similar things to before but never in a particularly structured way.
- BCB members post a style, genre, sub-genre of music that they don't like/don't get.
- Another BCB member who is a fan of said style produces an introduction/sampler of that music and sends it (but without track listing)
- Original BCB member commits to spend a week or so listening to collection with an open mind and posts their honest comments
- Person who produced comp posts tracklisting and others discuss
What do people think?

It'll end in tears.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. - Bertrand Russell

It has the potential to end up as yet another Prog thread really seeing as Prog is one of the genres a lot don't 'get.'

I see how this would be a good one to do an introduction to. Start with a bit of James Brown and work along from there. Not for me to do though, but to follow the roots into the genre and then explore it would help it make more sense.

Who's interested in Doom Folk then?
Good idea but he danger lies in the fact that discs must be listened to and commented on.
If that's not happening it'll be the Mix Club all over again.

Re: Let BCB take you out of your comfort zone..
So how do we do this?
We could list as follows:
(ignorant BCBer) corporate whohohore - (genre) Rap - (volunteer)
Sensemeliaparupapumpum - Reggae -
Hark! Heifer's Angels Sing - Prog -
with volunteers then putting their name in the third column?
Are we ok on the copyright side of things as all we are doing is offering a sampler which will hopefully spark off a buying frenzy by the recipient?

I really don't know much about bluegrass, but what I've heard has been a bit 'meh', so I'd be up for a sampler of that style.

I can understand the idea behind this, and if it works for some then fine. But I have a problem with this kind of thing ... I know what music I like and what music I don't. Somebody sending me 20 tracks of a style of music that I don't like on a CD isn't going to change my mind.
I did genuinely try something similar to this a few years back with a former work colleague. He was a huge Pink Floyd fan, and I can't stand them. But I agreed to his suggestion that he would put together a 20 track CD of their music of his choice, that he thought would change my mind. I genuinely tried, gave it two or three listens, and with the possible exception of See Emily Play, the rest of it was shite.
I don't like Rap. I don't like Prog. Maybe I don't "get" them, who knows ? But what I do know is that getting a 20 track compilation from someone isn't going to change that.
But ... do carry on.

It might do...you never know.
A lot of the stuff I listen to now I've picked up of jolly up comps...stuff I would never actively seek out myself but something that grabbed my attention

Re: Let BCB take you out of your comfort zone..
I'm pretty sure that in my last 35 years of listening to music that no one is about to change my mind about prog. I'll bet few folks here have not already ventured out of their comfort zone more than once , so I bet there a few volunteers as recipients. On the other hand, many of us are willing to foist our opinions on others share. I volunteer to tackle the bluegrass for the masked fellow.
Oh boy is it getting rough, when my old world charm isn't quite enough.

I really really dont get modern R&B but i seriously couldnt see anyone convincing me otherwise. Its a strange idea. Maybe if i wasa 17 or something you could have got me into some weird stuff but barring the above i like something in pretty much every genre you care to name.
Third,
Third and bird,
Just across the street, where the birdies meet,
Going 'deet, deet, deet'
Third, third, third, third and bird.

Put me down for rap too. I'd love to be able to get it.

I kind of agree with you, except that the Rap I get to hear is what makes the charts - I'm willing to take the chance that it isn't 'the real thing'.
After all, Tym Doggs (?) Fuck Compton is one of the greatest tracks ever, despite being in a genre that does not float my boat.
