TD Canon Pt 2 of 134- Cyclone

Postby never/ever » 20 Dec 2008, 19:20

That album was released inbetween two of the most fruitful periods in TD's history (The Baumann- and Schmoelling-periods) and it's still the odd duck in my collection. Bent Cold Sideway always put me off because of Steve Jolliffe's vocals even though it has an interesting angle (perhaps I should employ a Voicekiller and see how it sounds then). Madrigal Meridian is worth the purchase of the album but this is still an album I would not recommend to outsiders if they wanted to start listening to TD.

What do you think?

I like it a lot and I'd give it more than **. The vocals were a brave move at the time I think, along with the drums. I think it was the last TD album I heard though.

Agreed - up until recently......

I remember when it came out most die-hard fans didn't like the inclusion of vocals - not proper TD

Because of this prejudice I resisted for decades until I got in discussion with our very own Jon K who has always been a fan of it.

He persuaded me to buy it (about 4 years ago) and I heard the album with fresh ears and less prejudice.

I like it a lot- coincidentally I played it last week.

TD are never far from a CD player in my gaff and Cyclone like most of the others is in that rotation...!

A great LP

I like it a lot. Postponed getting it because of its reputation and pleasantly surprised when I finally heard it. Half of it is instrumental. The vocal tracks are gloriously over the top and great fun ... not a description one automatically uses for TD!
Heresay I know, but I much prefer it to Tangram, Pergamon and White Eagle.

I'd pretty much agree with your assessment and rating. An instrumental version of Bent Cold Sidewalk could be good but those vocals are just horrible. Even the instrumental side is pretty forgettable fare. I gave it a listen just last week to see if it would click but ultimately it just iritated and bored me. They would go on to make far worse, especially after 1986, but given that this was released during their peak years it's a huge disappointment. Fortunately their next album was a return to form.
