Cleaning inside of CD Players and sound systems
What's the story here? Should I be taking my CD player, amps etc into the shop for periodic internal cleaning? I haven't really and just wondering? Or would have them poke around inside do more harm than good. I just saw how much dust there is inside the computer.

Peter - unless you live next door to a building site and you always keep your windows open, or unless the little old lady next door is always in her yard beating her rugs & carpets with one those old fashioned carpet beaters (and your windows are still open), then I wouldn't bother.
If the CD player's functioning OK, then let it be.
If you're tempted to take a peek inside and it looks pretty dusty, ask Harvey if you can borrow his can of Dust Off, but be careful you don't spray that white stuff all over the lens!

I've had 2 CD's (store bought) that have not played right in recent months. Not newly purchased CD's but ones I've had a while.
How about the car CD player? That gets a bit of dust I imagine.

You can buy CD lens cleaner discs - which is essentially a disc with a minute row of brushes on it positioned where the lens will read - which you pop in, follow the audio instructions and it;ll remove any dust.

I'm not familiar with Dust Off -- it may qualify -- but you can buy cans of pure compressed air anywhere that sells computer or photo supplies. I also use it when a CD skips -- which is often due to a dust mote, rather than a scratch.
This, on the other hand, is not a good idea for stereo equipment, computers or discs.

Just out of curiosity Crud, how much are they roughly? Used one a lot in the UK but ditched it before I came over.

The CD was with us in 1982 (Philips/Sony)
So the LP was the medium of choice for 34 years. Given that the CD is still there after 35, and vinyl made a comeback. it's...

Perhaps that purely on intuition, I still would see the CD als 'newish, relatively young', or something. Maybe even as something that I still have to get used to.
