Oh, John and Sam, I'm so sorry. He was truly a special little guy.

Very sad.
As has been said you'll never get over it and you'll also never forget the years you did have with him.

All the best, John and Sam. You did the right thing, as hard as it must have been.

RIP, Bosco. One of the greats (as are all BCB pets- now let's have the rest of them stick around for a while!)

I'm so sorry to hear this, he was a sweet little guy. John, you saved his life when you rescued him, and you and Sam gave him lots of love and a good life, you did the right thing today as hard as it must have been. He's a little doggy angel now, cavorting on all four legs and watching over all of us who met and adored him. He packed a lot of personality into his little body and will be missed greatly by all of us.

Rest in peace sweet little Bosco.

I still have your oil painting of him hung over the door to the lounge and the watercolour as my desktop.

They are both very precious to me.

Thanks - to all of you for your kind words.
I just feel a huge void. He was a tiny dog with a huge personality and our home and hearts are much much emptier without him there to fill them.
There will never be another Bosco.

No - never, but there are panting puppies snuggled up in RSPCA baskets even now who want to run round Boscos old haunts and chew your slippers. Give it time and maybe you will be ready to do it all again.

Bosco wouldnt want you getting lazy.

Thanks Sonny.
If I had a cat I'd want one like you.
And another like Orlando, Bosco's stepsister, to keep him company.

and yes, Min. You are right.
The hurt right now is so intense that I wouldn't even consider it, but I know we will soon.
The fact is that these little creatures give us back so much that even this level of agony at eventually losing them is worth it - I know that. It just doesn't feel that way when the wound is still quite this fresh.

I know. I was at work at 7am when I saw your message and burst into tears in handover. My staff all thought it was because I was emotional at my last shift and patted my thigh :?

The pain is just unbearable. You see blankets and jumpers on the floor (well probably not at yours, Mr analtidy) and out the corner of your eye think it is them.

It is of course daft to think of jumping into new pet owning too soon, when the pain is raw but I think it is such a shame when you have so much to offer to not have that love soaked up by some new bouncing ball of furry dogness.

Funnily enough your sig line looks prophetic now. I wonder if you knew somewhere inside that he was not long for this side of the world.

Oddly no - that was an incidental thing that I had just noticed myself.

But there was a great similarity twixt Bos and I and Poo and Christopher Robin.

Two of us were of very little brain and the other two were Bosco and Christopher Robin.

I have too much love for animals to leave my home unwelcoming for one who needs it.
But I want to have a little space and time to grieve for the loss of my best friend (for that is undoubtedly what I am doing) before a new one comes along to capture my heart in a similar (but never the same) way.

Hopefully it will be another 15 years or so before I'm feeling like this again.

My sympathies, John. I'm not really a pet person so I hope you take it as a tribute to Bosco and your relationship with him that this had me feeling very choked up. What an awesome dog he must have been - I remember him vaguely from my one attendance at a London JU. Keep well.

I know what it feels like to lose a loved pet. And, Dawn and I know how upset we'd be if anything happened to Murphy.

Take care, you two, and, when you're ready, give that love and attention to another little rascal waiting out there.

John and Sam, I'm sorry to hear about this. Remember the good times, ok ?

I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but with all the photos and his BCB persona, it's like I knew the cute little bugger closely.

One of the grrrreats indeed!

(and Minnie's kitsch pet afterlife story had me tearful)

Anyway, condolences, John & Sam!

Just to go back to this for a moment, it has always been my favourite piece of writing (it is the very last line of the last chapter of The House at Pooh Corner) and has never failed made me sob. But the allegory of Christopher Robin's leaving Pooh is so so poignant to me now that I feel I shall never again be able to read it.
So I leave it here.

AA Milne wrote:"A Knight?"
"Oh, was that it?" said Pooh. "i thought it was a -- Is it as Grand as a King and Factors
and all the other things you said?"
"Well, it's not as grand as a King," said Christopher Robin. "I'll make you one."
And he took a stick and touched Pooh on the shoulder, adn said, "Rise, Sir Pooh de Bear,
most faithfull of all my Knights."
So Pooh rose and sat down and said "Thank you," which is the proper thing to say when you
have been made a Knight, and he went into dream agian, in which he and Sir Pump and
Sir Brazil and Factors lived together with a horse, and where faithfull knights (all except Factors,
who looked after the horse) to Good King Christopher Robin...
and every now and then the shook his head, and said to himself, "I'm not getting it right."
Then he began to think of all the thing Christopher Robin would want to tell him whe he came
back from wherever he was going to, and how muddling it would be for a Bear of Very Litlle Brain
to try and get them right in his mind. "So, perhaps," he said sadly to himself, "Christopher
Robin won't tell me any more," and he wondered if being a Faithfull Knight meant that you just
went on being faithfull without being told things.
Then, suddenly again, Christopher Robin, who was still looking at the world with his chin in his hands,
called out "Pooh!"
"Yes?" said Pooh.
"When I'm -- when -- Pooh!"
"Yes, Christopher Robin?"
"I'm not going to do Nothing any more."
"Never again?"

"Well, not so much. They don't let you."
Pooh waited for him to go on, but he was silent again.
"Yes, Christopher Robin?" said Pooh helpfully.
"Pooh, when I'm --you know -- when I'm not doing Nothing,
will you come up here sometimes?
"Just me?"
"Yes, Pooh."
"Will you be here too?"
"Yes, Pooh, I will be really. I promise I will be, Pooh."
"That's good," said Pooh.
"Pooh, promise you won't forget about me, ever. Not even when i'm a hundred."
Pooh thought for a little.
"How old shall I be then?"
"Ninety-nine."
Pooh nodded.
"I promise," he said.

Still with his eyes on the world Christopher Robin put out a hand and felt for Pooh's Paw.
"Pooh," said Christopher Robin earnestly, "ifI -- if I'm not quite --"
he stopped and tried again -- "Pooh, whatever happens, you will understand,
won't you?"
"Understand what?"
"Oh, nothing. He laughed and jumped to his feet. "Come on!"
"Where?" said Pooh.
"Anywhere," said Christopher Robin.

So they went off together. But wherever they go, and whatever happens to them on the way,
in that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.
