I find Lennon's solo career to border on the insipid. Some good tracks here and there but he lost it big time after Imagine.

Album- The New York disc on the Lennon Anthology boxset

Track- God
Don't fight the hypothetical

Why did you pick the New York disc if you think his best work was behind him by that point?

I'd rather listen to his raw live stuff and home noodlings than those last 4 or 5 albums any day.

I think I understand. The New York stuff is raw and funky, while the concurrent and later albums (Mind Games, Walls and Bridges, Double Fantasy, Milk and Honey) are slick or something. I just thought it was weird you didn't choose Plastic Ono Band or Imagine or the Ascot disc as your favorite, since you said it was all downhill after Imagine.

ASCOT
Plastic Ono Band
Imagine

NEW YORK
Some Time in NYC
Live in NYC
Mind Games

LOST WEEKEND
Walls and Bridges
Rock and Roll

DAKOTA
Double Fantasy
Milk and Honey

:?:

Is there a limited number of positions in the Not the BCB 100 list? Do we need to worry about how many of each genre are represented?

Besides, John Lennon is one of the five or so most important artists in rock history. Surely his solo work, even if one finds it a letdown after The Beatles, deserves a position at least in the Not the BCB 100 list.

You meant to post this in the 10,000 Maniacs thread, right? :)

I really got into Mind Games and Walls & Bridges in 2006. At least the good stuff on both of these LP's. So those songs are at the top of my list when I think of a favourite. Despite the coke-session-slickness, a good John song is a good song.

Album:Plastic Ono Band
Song: Out of the Blue

Qu
aco, did Lennon ever comment on McCartneys output towards the end of the decade when they'd patched things up?

Nobody else seen this, then?

I've commented on it in the 'What film did you last watch?' thread.

Yeah. By the 80s, that whole genre had become totally decadent and divorced from its roots:

Album: Plastic Ono Band
Song: "Instant Karma"

Now for the Baron Party Line.
The early singles and Plastic Ono Band are probably the coolest shit put down by just about anyone. "Instant Karma" might be the highest possible achievement of the pop-rock single. The apotheosis, if you will.

And yet, Walls and Bridges is not to be underestimated. A friend told me about a tape he had with that one one side and Third/Sister Lovers on the other. You know it makes sense.

Of course, Lennon's solo "career" could only be disappointing, but it shouldn't be (and isn't) so easily dismissed.

Why not?
