BCB 100 - The Stone Roses

Postby geoffcowgill » 28 Jun 2006, 17:36

Hmmm. I can't imagine which of these albums people are going to pick.

My memories of the dramatic, earth-shattering impact of the Stone Roses is limited to seeing the "Fools Gold" video maybe a couple of times on MTV. I got the first album only a couple of years ago. It's good, but I get the feeling "you had to be there." I'm going to give it another spin here pretty soon, but I think "I Am The Resurrection" is probably my fave.

Album - The first one.

Track - Waterfall

I think you probably did have to be there, but luckily I was. Every now and then it's my favourite album of all time.

Well, that will do it for me. I could imagine getting caught up in it and every so often I do just that - still, it feels a little dishonest for me to jump in with the proselytisers when I wasn't actually there!

'Waterfall' is a joy. Surely everyone can see that? A sheer, shimmering beaut of a song.

The debut is obviously the best album, and my favourite track on it is She Bangs The Drum.

But my favourite Roses track is One Love ... brilliant groove all the way through it, fantastic drumming from Reni and the way the verse slips into the chorus is seamless. Great song.

Album: duh
Song: She Bangs the Drums

They were a great band, because they wrote great music, basically.

The debut (US version) is one my most treasured records. I am constantly making copies of it and turning people on to the joys it holds. There is really something universal and appealing about this record. They tapped into something truly special.

Favorite Track: Elephant Stone or Don't Stop

You better watch your step, Mr. P. You're living proof of the law of averages - the more you post, the more rubbish you post.

I've probably only got 500 more posts of rubbish than you. And I do have 5500 good posts to balance it out...

I seriously considered buying the import instead of the UK version. Both Fools' Gold and Elephant Stone on there are the full-length versions, aren't they?

Album - The Stone Roses (although Second Coming is very good, IMO)
Song - Going Down is my fave most of the time, but some days it's Elephant Stone, others it's Made Of Stone, then sometimes it's Tightrope or Ten Storey Love Song.

Well, of course, the first album is the daddy, but my favourite song, is Breaking Into Heaven from Second Coming: which has the best Zeppelin guitar-fest that Jimmy Page didn't actually play.

Yeah, but the sound quality is a bit poor. You would be better off just buying that Very Best Of disc from a couple years back. The remastering on there is superb and it makes me wish they would remaster the whole first album. But it does contain all the key tracks.

Ah, well then. I didn't make that much of a mistake buying the UK version. And yeah, the Very Best Of is very good.

I wonder how long this can carry on for in this relatively civilised, hands-across-the-Atlantic fashion ...

Clay Davis

They're the first band I truly loved and got into them through my mates big brother. I always quite liked them then one night at an "indie" disco in Falkirk they played Fools Gold then I Am The Resurection back to back. That moment sold me on them. Their debut is one my all time favourite albums.

Album: Stone Roses
Song: I Am The Resurection

I had stopped listening to pop music for about 5 years by 1989.
It was tired and boring and I was getting far far more out of other areas of music.
Then I heard Elephant Stone on the radio (followed by there She Goes by the Las) at work and everything suddenly changed again.

I was just playing the album at the gym this morning on my iPod and time and time again - even 17 years later - it just floors me.

I don't care for the singles between the albums too much (though I like some of the earlier ones like Sally Cinamon) and I verge on disliking Second Coming but the 12 songs on that debut album are fucking gobsmacking.
Is there a more uplifiting moment in all music than when the chorus finally appears in I Am The Resurrection?
Is there fuck.

Song: She Bangs the Drums
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

You surprise me.

'Sally Cinnamon'? For fuck's sake, man! Lazy, wimpy, half-arsed stude pop.

And we have here decreed, en masse, and several times before, that 'The Stone Roses' is the most overrated album of all time. Your contrary stance doesn't do you any favours this time round, fella-me-lad! :P

In America it's not even rated. Once in a while you will see it mentioned in a magazine but it's usually more of a condescending aside at how cute the whole Britpop thing was than any actual display of merit or worthiness. Rarely do you see it mentioned otherwise and you would be hard pressed to find someone that has actual heard it. If anyone remembers them at all it was basically for the few months in 1994 that they played Love Spreads on the modern rock radio stations. It's mainly just whispered about and loved by people that like that sort of thing (shiny guitar pop). It's kind of amazing, really, the whole night and day aspect between what's overrated over there compared to here.

Maybe you should live here, John. You could wallow in elitist condescension. We have loads!
