Chris Chopping wrote:Otis Redding-My Girl

As much as I adore Otis Redding, it's always bugged me that he gets the lyrics wrong on this recording. "I've got so much lovin', the bees envy me"? "I don't need no money/All I need is my fame"??

He does sing the hell out of it, though. And that "oooh" before the horns break out is great.

otis was a notorious lyric messer-upper. witness his hard day's night with "when i get home to you/there ain't nothing to do" :?

otis might be my favorite singer, but his 'my girl' could never top the temptations version, played out as it is...

I've not counted or anything, but hasn't 'Maybe I'm Amazed' shown up quite a lot? Justifiably so, to my ears, but it'll be quite surprising if Macca's much derided (mostly outside BCB) solo career yields the board's consensus.

Coan, are you planning on using the extra tens for the tally as well? I think in a poll as unlikely to have consistent results as this one, it might help bring things towards the mean somewhat, and I don't think it counts as skewing the scores, seeing as there aren't any points allotted to the songs in the first place and because this isn't a contest either.

Up to you, of course...

Every song voted for carries the same weight - including these extra tens. I thought getting people to vote for their top 100 would mean the results would be more representative, but it'd be too much work.

'Maybe I'm Amazed' is way down the list! I'm thinking of finally posting a top 30 list, and I don't know if it'll show. It looks like it's the most popular song that features Paul McCartney, tho' - surprisingly.

All of the above is why he suggested it in the first place.

I really don't get the fuss with Maybe I'm Amazed, a very average early 70's power ballad. There's nothing that distinctive about it at all, I really don't think that were it a song by say Gilbert 'O' sullivan it would have the same reputation now.

It's the chromatic run after the first two lines that clinches it for me personally. Even on the depressingly plastic by-the-numbers 'Tripping The Live Fantastic' it sends chills down me.

I don't think it was particularly big when it came out, so I don't think McCartney being involved is such a big factor in the status of the song.

This has been hard. If I hadn't committed to take part in the original thread I would probably have given up.

Anyway I've managed to cobble something together using BCB cup lists and other things that have come into my head. I'm sure I could have come up with a better list if I had put more thought into it, but equally I could probably have spent forever on it and still not been totally happy.
