I'm going to be "pinging" like crazy this year. There's somebody I want to see on every stage at one time or another. The banjo (Carolina Choc. Drops and Gillian Welch) and star (Trombone Shorty and Hot Tuna) are the only ones with two things I want to see, neither of them in a row.
I'll have a chair with me, but don't expect to settle down much.
The Star stage and Towers of Gold stage are back-to-back, so they alternate. This seems to help a bit with overcrowding. Towers of Gold is a new stage (as of last year). Last year it was not terribly crowded, probably mostly because not everybody knew about it.

Had a fun time today. Saw Kelly Willis, Jonathan Richman, some Guy Clark, Fountains of Wayne and Richard Thompson. I took off after, but it was nice to see Six String, Hatz, Baron, Minnie and Twillyre, who's a good BCB addition.

I caught everyone John saw plus Kinky Friedman and my fave of the day, Buddy Miller. Not only is Buddy one of my favorite country singer/songwriters but in a 45 minute span I also got to see/hear Jim Lauderdale, Patty Griffith and Emmylou Harris with him. I then made it over to Gillian Welch where the Minnies and Toomany were hanging and then we all split. Gillian was too crowded so I'm really glad I stuck to my guns and went to see Buddy. Except for a wonderful guitar solo from David Rawlings as we were making out way around the side of the Banjo stage it was a wonderful finish to an overwhelming day.
As I expected, the festival as good as the music is and the precision of the logistics of running such a thing, it's not my bag. It would take the right list of artists and the mix of friends to get me back again. I'm not saying I won't ever go again but the stats would have to be aligned like they were this time to convince me to do it. Thanks again to Sloopjohnc for making this as fun and easy as it could have been for me. It was great seeing everyone. I'm sorry I missed Ms. Pillowz. If we had not lost so much time trying to hail a cab at the park I would have stayed to have dinner with everyone. As it was I was able to get a good meal at the Ferry Bldg. and catch my ride back to the train that got me home at 10 instead of 11 which made this morning a lot better for me. All in all a very fun and successfull day and thanks to everyone for having a part in that.

I know now that the California weather report is to be taken with a liberal pinch of salt. The predicted blazing sunshine gave way to fog rolling in and buggar me, people were putting on their cardies.
Naturally, the highlight of the day was seeing all the other BCBers, as the music at HSB is not what I would describe as reflective of my personal taste. Drinking beer outdoors can never be wrong, and there was plenty of that going on. I was rather taken with a gofer that kept popping it's little head out of the ground right up until the moment that RIchard Thompson started to play whereupon he burrowed all the soil back over him and went back underground. I contemplated doing the same.
I hope Patti Smith put on a good show for the twomanies, I was sad to miss her.

So how was Patti Smith and Elvis Dave? Carolyn? Inquiring minds, etc.....
The SF Chronicle reported that city officials wanted to talk to Warren Hellman about his festival. His reply was, "I have two words for them and it's not Happy Birthday."
Warren also told his crew that he could either have this festival every year or buy a Renoir. The look on his face told you he wasn't going shopping for any artwork anytime soon. Yay!
