Thank you, all. That was fantastic. Watching Yomp and Jumper K sipping margaritas in a sports bar will be a treasured memory.

It was truly one for the ages. It was a great group. Either folks I don't see often enough or people I was delighted to meet. And in a great city. This is the way to do it, people! JUotA has definitely sprung back to life. See you next year! (More thorough wrap up when I get home.)

Now it's off to bed and an early train (hopefully on time this time) to St. Louis.

I have arrived safe and sound back in California. The trip home was as smooth as one could hope.

I took a cab from the hotel to Logan Square to catch a Blue Line "L" train to O'Hare. The hotel staff at the door ran down to the corner to hail me a cab and when it arrived about two minutes later this real jovial, smartly dressed man took me to the square. So we're talking and after awhile he said to me, " you are my fourth customer today and you are the first person who talked to me besides to tell me where they are going. They sit there staring at their phones." There's the disconnect. People don't communicate like they did once upon a time.

While sitting on a bench outside of the Sacramento airport a woman sat next to me and eyeing my Dusty Groove bag she asked me "What did you get?" I was a little shocked to be frank but after I showed her the contents she told me she used to work for Polydor, the Mobile Fidelity (original phase),
Tower Records including the magazine Pulse. So she was truly interested in the music instead of "oh isn't that quaint. I remember records." She also said "Chicago's a great music town, isn't it?
She said she lived there for four years so she knew.

Now I know more than I did. Chicago is a good town. I liked the architecture, even some of the very worn stuff that some might not care for. I enjoyed looking at people's plants in their yards. I saw lots of Hostas, several types and several I had no clue.

Michael, Frank and I had some superlative margaritas at a nearby Nuevo Mexican restaurant. Once I steered them away from the house stuff, which is fine but they are usually sweet and weak as they don't want to scare away the casual imbiber who has one and done. Once we started calling the tequila things were a ok. So good that those other two went back yesterday to repeat the crime and some.
Michael was in rare form last night. The hockey game was a lot closer than I thought it was going to be but we were on a different mission last night.

Edit: I'll let Michael describe the 666 bar/restaurant we went to on Sunday to see Martin and Denise off.
Their special was an Anthrax Burger........

Great write-up! I have recently got back in touch with an old school friend who vanished from London many years ago to live on a boat in the Virgin Islands. All boating at an end, she now lives in San Francisco! Watch this damn space.

So Jumper , Yomp and myself are about to head out for our last breakfast. The last three men standing (pre margarita condition) are leaving town. Thank you Chicago. It's been a blast. Pictures when I get home.

Where did we go Friday night? I remember drinks and food and nearby the Days Inn but not sure. It was a pleasure meeting Frank that first night, one of many. I caught up with Sam and Joe, Paul, Michael and I think John and Basha were there too. Someone else will need to fill in the details.

Saturday morning we met at The Edge for breakfast and it was decided that some of us needed to go to Chess Studio/Willie Dixon museum. It is closed on Sundays and nothing was stated on the website about Memorial day. As it turns out, the tours are given by volunteers so it is very possible that a volunteer wouldn't be available on a holiday. Paul, Michael, Frank and I took a cab to the place and arrived a few minutes early so we stood outside checking out the iron fence around the museum garden that had silhouettes of well known photos of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and one or two others. I believe someone took some photos so hopefully they will pop up soon. Our tour guide was Willie Dixon's grandson and he said more than once that he had to leave at 3 p.m. sharp to go to a paying job. :D He was great though, very informative. He was shocked that no one had any questions after he told us a story or some basic fact about something in particular. It didn't even dawn on me to go to Chess until a few days before the trip so I didn't read up and remind myself of the details I was familiar with or any holes in the story I knew. He did talk about the lack of a house band as every artist recorded with his touring band (and possibly others sometimes) instead of having one band do it all like many studios of the day. This gave the Chess records an individuality to them which I had not thought of. He says The Rolling Stones came to Chess before 1963, he said 1962 I think, and they were sent home without a recording contract or any recording. I wasn't aware of that but the young man said it was true. We got to hold and play Willie Dixon's bass which was way cool. There is the usual recording detritus to look at from mono tape recorders to mastering stations and Lansing speakers (before Altec?) that looked old as dirt. Lots of great photos including one of Willie Dixon's dad. the studio has a bunch of chairs for visitors to sit in while watching a video so it feels less like a studio even with the control booth still intact. They do education and put on free concerts in the garden in the summer. They start the weekend after we leave. All in all a good afternoon spent there.

From a different part of the country. The local tippel was quite good. A good time was had by all and as it was a travel day for me I was lacking a l little energy but the cmpany was more than enough stimulation to keep me going.

You want pictures. I GOT 'EM

First stop Detroit. No photography allowed inside Motown (boo!) but the outside shot is of course obligatory (including selfie)

With the afternoon to kill I noticed the Detroit Historical Museum was only a walk from the hotel. This apparently is Detroit's first ever car.

I of course demand more up to date wheels

And so on to Chicago, where I soon met up with these two reprobates. A quick look at the watch revealed a big hand and a little hand which of course meant MARGARITA TIME

Phil Chess's office - Chuck Berry you say. OK have him come in and I'll give him a listen

Ah yes Ketchupgate !! So at breakfast one morning I'm trying to get ketchup out of the bottle, when Yomp takes over. In fairness he did get the ketchup out of the bottle, but none of it ended up on my plate - my shirt, the walls, everywhere but
