JUotA 2013?
Aren't we past the time when we've not only argued about the location for the year, but have also voted?
Or should last rites be administered?
Toronto was lead contender for 2013, but other suggestions remain welcome.
The constants are as follows:
It's the time frame of Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May).
Because there can always be NYC and LA jolly ups if an out-of-town BCBer visits, these are not considerations for host towns.

I think we should do Fremont, CA. Loaded with local California history, ethnic restaurants, a big C&W bar with bands and a few water parks, which are fun for all ages.
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk!

As we are off to New Zealand in feb, our attendance is unlikely (although not impossible), so I won't take part in the discussion.

Re: JUotA 2013?
We are in the worst financial shape we've ever been in, unfortunately. If things improve, I'm totally there, wherever it is. I very much like the idea of Toronto- my main concerns (other than the people, that is, though that always seems to take care of itself even though it's been a pretty small group the last few times) are that we move it around- check- that it be a major league baseball city- check- and that there be at least one BCBer that knows the turf pretty well- check.
I'm fully up for discussing other considerations, but for me, I'm thinking unless there are any objections, we should think in terms of Toronto. It is the time we usually start discussing it.

Re: JUotA 2013?
We would be really happy with Toronto as a destination, and if at all possible would try everything we could to be there.
A bigger priority for us next year would be the 10th BCB birthday party and tying that in with a trip to the UK and we also want to get out to California again as soon as possible. Now I live in a country that doesn't believe in allocating reasonable vacation time to fit all those things in might prove difficult, but if we can do it, we will.

Mentioning someone who knows the turf and has been to JUs before, I presume that it goes without saying that I'm speaking of Yellowjacket here.

I'm pretty sure YJ doesn't live in Toronto. I get the feeling he's a bit west of here.

I like the idea of Toronto. I'm not 100% sure I can make it at this time.

Re: JUotA 2013?
I had a feeling there'd be underwhelming response. I recognize we're competing with that wonderful BCB 10th bash.
I'd been feeling the financial crunch a few years ago and that's why I had to miss a few JUotAs. Now others are in that boat. To quote a favorite artist of mine, "I've been where you're hanging, I think I can see how you're pinned."
So, do we let the idea go? Do we take a hiatus for a year, let the 10th bash be the only big gathering of 2013, and come back to JUotAs in 2014? I've been pondering taking this to a poll and putting it in NDL.
I know last year, due to attrition, we, oh who are we kidding, I wound up calling it much later than we usually do. But maybe it's just dying on the vine.
As one of the JUotA originators, of course I'd hate to see it go. But there's been a steady enough decrease in numbers, to me it seems like we call in the priest and administer last rites.
Yes, this thread is less than a month old. Yes, it was decided later on the last go-around in an effort to not have it die then. But if we're in collective non-committal mode, I don't know how to breathe life into it and make it happen.

Re: JUotA 2013?
And I've only just seen that the BCB 10th thread has been made universal on all forums.
Letting the JUotA step aside for the year seems pragmatic.

Re: JUotA 2013?
I thin the JUOTA in its current form needs a re-boot of some kind - maybe a hiatus is wise (it is very unlikely we could make 2013 for a start), but also a rethink of the location and form is also in order.

I hope the JUotA doesn't die out. But I've got tentative trips planned for May 2013 and 2014, so it's unlikely I could attend for a while.

Now that I'm making plans to go to the 10th anniversary JU as part of a larger vacation I'm pretty certain I won't be able to attend another JU anywhere outside of my driving range.

Re: JUotA 2013?
I'd be sad to let it lapse, and would be worried that it might just die out and be impossible to revive. So I'm all for keeping it going even if 2013 is minimal.
That said, there's no avoiding the fact that more of us are in negative financial straits than ever before. I wish I could say it's important enough to me that I'd make it no matter what, but that's not really feasible right now, sadly.

Why hasn't anyone nominated New Orleans yet?

Actually, last night I was half-heartedly suggesting Philadelphia as a few of us were gathered.

Re: JUotA 2013?
We already have our tickets for the Damned that weekend, so we're out twice- once 'cause of that, once 'cause we can't really afford it right now (though my personal finances have gotten slightly better).
I still support it continuing, but I suppose it'll have to continue without the hatzes if it does. Philly's a great spot- still remembering our 2008 trip fondly.

I agree that Philadelphia would be a great spot. I just hope that happens in a year we can attend!
