I reached the character limit for an individual post. Thus, I've broken the list into A-L and M-Z in two posts below (7th and 8th post).

Great work take5_D, it's probably more interesting to have our lists "exposed" in this manner...some of the choices are surprising in the sense that I never would have guessed that moot, for example would rate T-Rex as high as he did--shows we can't always "pick" people's tastes

Anyway, what about take5_D's own top 20?
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Alas. My free, unlimited access to lexis lasts for only a few more months. I actually prefer Westlaw, but lexis has some stuff that West doesn't.

Of course. The one thing I learned from The Glenn Gould Reader is how to be contrarian.

b.,

I don't know about the lexis part, but if it's the nexis part you need (newspapers), you can get a subscription to this. It's expensive (about $1500) but it's still a pretty good deal. I don't know if this covers the law stuff you may need though. There was an article in the NYT about private subscriptions to lexis or nexis. Of course, my advice would be to search in lexis nexis limiting the search to New York Times for the keywords lexis and nexis.

How's that for self-referential action?

Brilliant! You're folding in on yourself there, but it's spot on because the only thing I use lexis for is to search for NYT stories that are older than five or eight days or whatever is beyond the reach of the free NYT site.

Though I prefer Westlaw (which has a ton of periodicals but no NYT) for legal stuff, that would be what I would need lexis for too - there are some functions that are mutually exclusive to the two services. Somehow, I suspect a $1500 subscription would be wishful thinking for the legal product.

When I have time to think, I'll come up with a list of 20 LPs. I may enjoy being willfully contrarian, I try to choose my battles. This won't be one.

your top 20 albums

I find the individual lists more interesting than the thought of compiling everything into a top100. --t5_D

updated 4 May 2004

your top 20 albums

Aloysius

Single albums only so not as much soul as there might (nor jazz for that matter). These are mostly albums I've been listening to for 10 years or more (and a lot of them are just cassette copies that I've been hammering for that long). Mostly resticted to one album per artist to give it a bit of (false) variety:

1. Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Don’t Stand Me Down
2. Van Morrison – Common One
3. Jonathan Richman – Jonathan Sings!
4. Pere Ubu – The Modern Dance
5. Cardinal – Cardinal
6. Curtis Mayfield – Curtis/Live!
7. The Modern Lovers – The Modern Lovers
8. Randy Newman – Good Old Boys
9. Joni Mitchell – Hissing of Summer Lawns
10. Gil Scott-Heron – Reflections
11. Nick Drake – Bryter Later
12. Loudon Wainwright III – Album II
13. Gary Burton & Chick Corea – Crystal Silence
14. Bobby Bland – Dreamer
15. Jorge Ben – Africa Brasil
16. Elvis Costello – Imperial Bedroom
17. Serge Gainsbourg – Melody Nelson
18. Denim – Back in Denim
19. Scritti Politti – Songs to Remember
20. Talking Heads – Remain in Light
21. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – The Blue Trees
22. Teenage Fanclub – Grand Prix
23. The Lilac Time – The Lilac Time
24. Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil – Tropicalia 2
25. Fatima Mansions – Bertie’s Brochures

Here goes:

1 T.REX - THE SLIDER
2 NEIL YOUNG - ON THE BEACH
3 BLACK SABBATH - MASTER OF REALITY
4 GRAND FUNK - THE LIVE ALBUM
5 SEX PISTOLS - NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS

8 PREZIDENT BROWN - ORIGINAL BLUEPRINT
9 BARRINGTON LEVY - SHAOLIN TEMPLE
10 CLASH - FIRST ALBUM

13 O'JAYS - SHIP AHOY
14 LARRY GRAHAM - ONE IN A MILLION YOU
15 DOWN BY THE RIVER RIDDIM ALBUM
16 GREGORY ISAACS - THE COOL RULER RIDES AGAIN
17 HUMAN LEAGUE - DARE
18 MONKEES - MONKEES
19 VAN MORRISON - IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW
20 YELLOWMAN - MISTER YELLOWMAN

Some like the Yeelowman are representative. he's best heard on comps or the singles themselves.

And in alphabetical order here's the next 11:

EAGLES - HOTEL CALIFORNIA

Of course, it would be different another day, but for the minute:

1. Loveless – My Bloody Valentine
2. Pet Sounds – Beach Boys
3. 3Eps – Beta Band
4. Abbey Road – Beatles
5. Let It Come Down – Spiritualized
6. Dusty In Memphis – Dusty Springfield

8. Blood On The Tracks – Bob Dylan
9. Sounds Of Silence – Simon & Garfunkel
10. Here, My Dear – Marvin Gaye
11. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots – The Flaming Lips
12. Mutations – Beck
13. All Things Must Pass – George Harrison
14. The Baby Huey Story – Baby Huey & The Babysitters
15. Disintegration – The Cure
16. Hot Buttered Soul – Isaac Hayes
17. Concubine Rice – Lone Pigeon
18. Dance To The Music – Sly & The Family Stone
19. Munki – The Jesus & Mary Chain
20. Kingsbury Manx – The Kingsbury Manx

I would have liked to include Hefner's Fidelity Wars, Bizarro by the Wedding Present, James Brown at the Apollo 62, Otis Blue, Endtroducing and a heap more.

What would be more interesting for me would be a list of 20 favourite artists, as these days, I find myself more and more enjoying stuff by people who made great tracks but not so much albums, like Smokey Robinson, Elvis, Booker T, the Meters, Phil Ochs and so on. Still, that wasn't the question, so here's the answer.

And a quick thanks you and good stuff to the compilers for what will be a bit of effort. Good show old chaps!

love vigilante

I'm not really happy with this list. For a start, six of them are from Manchester or thereabouts (four on Factory), and as much as I love Manchester's music, I doubt that they're responsible for a third of the best albums ever recorded in the world ever. And it could be worse, because I limited myself to one album per artist, and had I not then... Anyway. It's too white (hey! Look at the token and not at all predictable soul and hip hop choices!), isn't really representative of my tastes because loads of my favourite music isn't on, or wasn't primarily made for, an album format. Oh, and the order isn't ideal, it was practically random at points. Technique over TQID was an instinctive decision this morning. Most of these albums seem to be the critically accepted "best" by the respective artists, so it's a bit dull and makes me look like Obvious Alf. Oh, and no Beatles or Dylan or Stones? What was I thinking? No REM either? They'll be disappointed when they see it. Anyway. I'm not changing now.

1) Technique - New Order
2) The Queen Is Dead - The Smiths
3) Closer - Joy Division
4) The Man Machine - Kraftwerk
5) For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
6) Peter Gabriel [3] - Peter Gabriel
7) Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
8) Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
9) The Unforgettable Fire - U2

17) Fear Of A Black Planet - Public Enemy

19) The Doors - The Doors
20) London Calling - The Clash

magilla
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Can - Tago Mago
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets
Nick Cave - The Boatman's Call
Scott Walker - Scott 3
Patti Smith - Horses
The Stooges - The Stooges
Emmylou Harris - Pieces Of The Sky
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
Laura Nyro - New York Tendaberry
Television - Marquee Moon
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
The Wedding Present - George Best
Sly and the Family Stone - Stand!
Husker Du - New Day Rising
Tim Buckley - Goodbye And Hello
John Cale - Helen Of Troy
The Gun Club - The Fire Of Love

I voted tactically. I love the classics by The Clash, Love, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, etc as much as anyone else, but am confident they'll be placed highly without my votes anyway.

But I really want to see John Coltrane, Can and Captain Beefheart as high as possible in the final poll, so placed them on the top of my list.
Other than that, the places on my list are inter-changable, as I get equal pleasure from all of the albums I've mentioned.

marios

OK, here goes nothing:

My Top 20 (for now anyway)

1. Big Star - Radio City
2. Beatles - Please Please Me (WHAT? I happen to LOVE this)
3. Beatles - White Album (the only artists i will mention twice here)
4. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
5. The Kinks - Are The Village Green Preservation Society
6. The Band - The Band
7. Al Green - Call Me
8. Wilson Pickett - The Sound Of Wilson Pickett
9. Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street
10. Stooges - Funhouse
11. VU - The Velvet Underground (3rd)
12. Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots
13. The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
14. Johnny Cash - At San Quentin (The Complete Concert)
15. Elvis Presley - From Elvis In Memphis (is Sun Sessions a comp? I don't have it anyway)
16. Replacements - Let It Be
17. Love - Forever Changes
18. Galaxie 500 - On Fire
19. Television - Marquee Moon
20. The Byrds - Notorious Byrd Brothers

Whoooooooo! That has hard.

Albums that came pretty close:

Stooges - Raw Power
Stones - Sticky Fingers
Beatles - Revolver
Big Star - both of them
The Temptations - Cloud 9 + Psychedelic Soul + Puzzle People (if i was allowed the twofer i might have opted for this)
VU - first
Wilco - YHF
Dylan - Blood On The Tracks + Highway 61 Rev
SFA - Fuzzy Logic
Flying Burritos - GPoS
The Kinks - Arthur
The Band - debut
Aretha - i really wanted her in my Top 20 but until yesterday i only had her 30 Greatest Hits. Now i also have her Atlantic boxset but i haven't really played it yet so i don't want to include her on the basis of how much i generally love her songs (if i was including her though i guess i'd go with either I Never Loved... or Lady Soul)
Jesus & Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Beach Boys - i was thinking Pet Sounds or Surf's Up but decided against them for now
Curtis Mayfield - Curtis/Live! or Superfly etc
Al Green - I'm Still In Love With You + Let's Get Together
Elliott Smith - XO
Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model + My Aim Is True
The Auteurs - New Wave
...and a hell of a lot more that i'm too bored to type right now - THANK GOD i hear yoy say? (these were just the titles on the first page of the piece of paper i have in front of me!)

Anyhoo...what is noticeable on this list is the underrepresentation of punk/post-punk (this type of music used to rule my Top Album lists), hip-hop (i like some albums but i wouldn't include them in my favourites of all time), no reggae (just not crazy about it) and 50s rock'n'roll (well, i'm mostly familiar with this music through comps to be honest). Oh, also i only included one jazz album (Roots & Blues) because i don't have that many and this happens to be the one i play the most.

I'm sure i'm forgetting sth but i'll shut up for now.

THANK GOD i hear you say?

Baron baby you're picking "All Things Must Pass" as number two is one reason among several you are in fact king.

Here is my list. I hate listing like this, and am gonna topweight my list for records I love that don't stand a chance...not to suggest records I'm picking don't deserve placement on a list like this, but I don't reckon I love number 20 any less than number 2. I'm gonna pitch hierarchy (and maybe plain old common sense) out the window.

1. Spacemen 3, "The Perfect Prescription"
2. Dr. Alimantado, "The Best Dressed Chicken In Town"
3. Opal "Early Recordings"
4. Lee Dorsey, "Yes We Can"
5. Spiritualized, "Lazer Guided Melodies"
6. Dennis Wilson, "Pacific Ocean Blue"
7. Green, "Elaine Mackenzie"
8. Donny Hathaway, "Live"
9. Underworld, "Dubnobasswithmyheadman"
10. The Gun Club, "Fire of Love"
11. v/a Nuggets II Box
12. David Crosby, "If I Could Only Remember My Name"
13. Talk Talk "Laughing Stock"
14. Eric B and Rakim, "Paid In Full"
15. Keith Hudson, "Playing It Cool and Playing It Right"
16. Susumu Yakota, "Sakura"
17. Sundial, "Other Way Out"
18. Michael Head + The Strands, "The Magical World Of..."
19. Curtis Mayfield, "Curtis Live!"
20. Crazy Horse s/t, Lisa Miller "Car Tape" (Tie)

There. Uh...there's 20 records that don't stand a flippin chance of ending up on a list like the one we'll arrive at. And it's a damn shame, since they'll all deserve it as much as the records that wnd up there.

nancy

the right summery profile

It's par for the course isn't it though Erik? Most of the posters here would have had their formative years somewhere between the periods 1975-1989, and so they associate "great" music with that period. It also leads to such bizzarre statements along the lines that the 80s were the greatest time for pop music ever, whereby they quote a number of indie singles which didn't sell. It's all history, and context isn't it? I'm struck by the lack of stuff outside the US/UK, but then I haven't helped the cause

Anyway, here would be my top 20 (plus 10)

1. David Bowie- Low
2. VU & Nico

Hey! To hell with that!!

I totally agree, of course. Some days, any one of my 20 (or one of many other albums) could sound like the best album in the world, but I've spend too long trying to massage this list into shape to not post it, so... geeky twats file here I come!!!

1. Yes - Close To The Edge
2. Rush - Moving Pictures
3. David Bowie - Heroes
4. Joni Mitchell - Hejira
5. Simple Minds - Sons & Fascination/Sister Feelings Call
(Not a twofer. As a thank-you to fans, Sons And Fascination was sold shrink-rapped with copies of Sister Feelings Call for the price of one album. There's nothing special about the packaging or presentation of this 'double album' offering - the two were just shrink-rapped together. A sticker was stuck on the sleeve of Sons And Fascination and this identifies the release as the limited edition double.")
6. Radiohead - The Bends
7. Björk - Homogenic

well until strider ruined it by giving the second vote to Slanted and Enchanted I thought i'd found an interesting statistic there.

Every Pavement album was voted for by 5 different posters once......except Slanted and Enchanted thanks to that ruining of a good statistic.

Here goes today's version. Subject to change. Would've preferred a top 50.

1. John Coltrane - A LOVE SUPREME
2. George Harrison - ALL THINGS MUST PASS
3. Rolling Stones - EXILE ON MAIN STREET
4. John Coltrane - GIANT STEPS
5. Beatles - HARD DAYS NIGHT
6. Jimi Hendrix Experience - ELECTRIC LADYLAND
7. My Bloody Valentine - LOVELESS
8. O.V. Wright - THE BOTTOM LINE
9. Big Star - RADIO CITY
10. Neil Young - ON THE BEACH
11. R.E.M. - MURMUR
12. Flying Burrito Brothers - GUILDED PALACE OF SIN
13. John Coltrane - COLTRANE'S SOUND
14. Al Green - CALL ME
15. Wire - CHAIRS MISSING
16. Sam Cooke - NIGHT BEAT
17. Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd - JAZZ SAMBA
18. Wire- PINK FLAG
19. Lord High Fixers - IS YOUR CLUB A SECRET WEAPON
20. Freakwater - OLD PAINT

Sadly, no room for LZ III, Elliott Smith XO, Black Sabbath Paranoid, Nirvana Nevermind and In Utero, Come's 11:11 or Gently Down The Stream, Beach Boys Today, Congos Heart of the Congos, Dr. Dre's The Chronic, Big Soul by the Original Sins, Joni Mitchell Court and Spark, Jayhawks Tomorrow the Green Grass, Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers, Sonic Youth Sister, Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain Psychocandy, Ramones, Sonic Youth Sister, Beatles Rubber Soul, Curtis Mayfield Curtis, Galaxie 500 On Fire, Thelonious Monk Brilliant Corners, Sonny Rollins Saxophone Collossus and Tenor Madness, Bedhead, Buck Owens Sings Songs of Harlan Howard, Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon Walls and Bridges .... and on and on.

Of all the glaring omissions, the greatest is possibly Big Star's "Third/Sister Lovers." Thanks to Little Tommy Winter for the reminder.
