I had a bad feeling about this post as I was scrolling down.

And then it turns out I was only enjoying the company of a pair of hooters.

Perusing bantamspast - the Bradford City archive site I found this team shot from the 1921/22 season. My wife's great-grandad is second row from the front on the far left.

Yes,good luck with that. And don't worry,Jane. My mum had hers out in 1985 and has eaten more or less normally ever since with no attacks.

28 frigging players, no wonder they won a lot.

Precisely. I'd be interested to hear Mark Echolalia's thoughts on the subject. Does the penny just drop one day?

Excuse me for butting in, and I don't want to derail the pics thread, but it's just a question of time and exposure in my view. It seems to be a popular thought that many Brazilians find European Portuguese impenetrable, but judging by the amount that work in Lisbon, and around Portugal, it's just a question of them needing a bit of readjustment. The Portuguese get all the Brazilian influences, TV, music etc so they have no problem understanding the Brazilian folk but the Brazilians don't really have any link with Portugal therefore it can sound a little alien at first. For me it's the rhythm of the two varieties that differs so much. You've got to be quick to pick up what the Portuguese say!
There's also a general dictum that says that the Spanish can't understand a bloody word the Portuguese say (I've heard many Portuguese moaning about this), and it's generally true when they're talking away at full speed, but I'd say it's also generally true of the Portuguese listening to two Spanish people yakking away at full pelt, as much as they always say that they understand everything the Spanish say. Although Portuguese is more complex and has more vowel sounds, I still think that if they heard two Spanish guys from Cadiz speaking at full speed, a Portuguese person wouldn't understand much at all.
The many Spanish tourists in Lisbon always seem to survive by speaking Spanish slowly, and having their Portuguese interlocutor do the same (although they never seem to be able to bring themselves to utter the simplest 'obrigado/a'/ instead of 'gracias' when needs be  ).
I'd be interested to hear what Echolalia thinks too as I think he's been in Portugal for a lot longer than I have.

(Once more, sorry for derailing the thread somewhat. Carry on...)
