EDIT: HA HA! Look at Leg of Lamb, he's all red from the pitchers of margaritas!
Or maybe he ate one of those hot pickled carrots.
Or maybe it was just hot in there.

The sundried chipotles, I think you'll find.

Good grief, I look either constipated or upset. Maybe both.

Just back from an evening at the Driskill Bar spent with Fish, Livet, and later, the Toomanies. It was very lovely, but these gatherings get increasingly bittersweet. Fish and I were in heaven when the Bob Wills was playing, which didn't last long enough. In any case, things were just starting to swing when I had to bust a move out of there to get ready to face the stacks of files and emails that await me back at work tomorrow. Life is just a party and parties weren't meant to last.Alas.

So it goes. It ain't totally over yet. I'm set to "do lunch" with Fish tomorrow (ho ho ho) and some beers in the evening at the Gingerman or perhaps a hamburger at Casino El Camino (or both) aren't out of the question.

The toomanies are back in the hotel. There aren't enough thanks in the world for the man we call the Baron. There was a lot of variety in this one- in many ways my favorite of the four I've attended. The only regret is those we missed this time around. But we're due to start tossing ideas around for the next one pretty soon. We need some fresh blood at that one.

We'll have photos and full stories once we get back.

In addition to the food and company, one of the great pleasures of the JU for me was rediscovering music. I've had a dry spell of late, only really listening to radio and the handful of albums I've uploaded to my Mac.

So I'm gonna post a couple of musical mementos - bearing in mind that all of them are immeasurably the poorer for not being pumped from the Baron wagon.

The latter was cranked after we dropped Livet off post-BBQ, in an attempt to shake off the '5am bedtime and reckless consumption of brisket' torpor. A little sharpener, if you will. Much comment was passed on how it was possibly the nastiest jam ever committed to tape.

And there were of course a million other Gulf Coast gems that I wouldn't know where the hell to look for on youtube.

Lamb might just have got his groove back. I've been listening to some of the JU-comp hoard and enjoying the hell out of it.

Well, that's the most unflattering pic of me I've seen in a long time. I was pretty exhausted that night. And frustrated that due to the noise level I couldn't hear what anybody was saying. I'm sure it was harder for Chantal, though. Having everything translated to her by Yves.

Whaddayamean you haven't had spareribs before Sam? The brisket I can understand because there's no point in eating it outside of Texas unless a Texan cooks it for you. :)

It's interesting to see that almost no one is smiling in those pics at Polvo's. Was the food that bad? ;)
My Shrimp in Diablo Sauce which Leg of Lamb also got was fantastic. I had so many good meals that it would be hard to say that anyone of them was the best I had but the sauce with that dish was more complex than I expected and rivaled the sauce we had with the brisket on Saturday.

The brisket was almost as good as my cousin's so I was very pleased with Baron's choices. It was definitely worth going to two 'Ques in a day and I was able to stock up a little for later. I bought two dishes at Whole Foods (roasted sweet potatoes, poblano peppers, blackbeans, corn and pumpkin seeds) and (edamama with juliened carrots) which along with the extra meat I bought Saturday provided me with dinner Sunday night before the bats and lunch on Monday at the airport before going through security. I had one of the most revolting sandwiches at the airport in Phoenix on the way to Austin and I swore I would not go through that again. It still haunts me today and makes me shiver with disgust thinking about it.

The room party Saturday night was fantastic. As has become custom, Livet brought an amazing bottle of single malt with her from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. I will provide the tasting notes later. They are OOT as they usually are from this club. I thought wine geeks were the only ones up their arses when it comes to describing their favorite libation. :) I brought a bottle of Tequila I'd never had before made with wild agave (as opposed to the usual farmed stuff). I'm not sure if it was supposed to taste any different than the tamed variety but it sure unleashed the animal in a few of us. :D

Sunday I took it easy after my walk to Whole Foods Market and stayed in my suite watching O'Brother Where Art Thou? It seemed appropriate for the location and kept me in the Southern groove while I recharged my batteries while noshing on some French cheese (Langres, 45% fat, cow's milk) with a little rose' from Provence to wash it down.
The boat ride for the bats was a great idea and even the guide was impressed with what we witnessed so it must have been memorable for even the seasoned bat fans. It didn't really rain though. A few sprinkles here and there at the beginning. Earlier in the day there had been hail and 60mph winds south of Austin and not far from where we had been on Saturday on the 'Que Trail so it could have been a LOT worse.

Did anyone go see The Meat Puppets at Waterloo on Monday?

The toomanies are packing up the computer for the shuttle ride to the airport, which is in about 45 min. Manly hugs from me to all. Can hardly wait to start planning the next one!

Subliminal plug for Seattle.

Leg of Lamb is a funny fucker, ain't he? And less than half the age of most of us. Baron, I think, was the second youngest.

No, no, no. It's that when I asked our fantastic host how the spare ribs there were (can't remember the name of the second place), he said he didn't know.
I have an answer, they're fuckin' good.

I noticed that. I think that might even be why I stopped bothering with the camera. I just thought I was taking bad pictures.

I didn't even know you went through with it! I'll have to try them sometime. Kreuz is the answer.

Well, I had fun. And though it wasn't necessarily the best place for conversation . . . well, I have a soft spot for Polvos. Every time I've ever gone, I've had a great time. It helps that I can walk there from my place!

On my way now to meet up with Fish for some burgers and beer. We had lunch at the Chili Parlor, and he managed to keep his complaints about the lack of greens on the down low.

We ate at Polvos? All I remember are the chips and downing three margaritas.

I wanna know if anyone took Sam's recommendation and feasted at The Mighty Cone?

They were delicicous.

I had to share this with you guys. This is my new favorite reason to love Texas this week.*

I hear he's playing Marfa soon. Oh hell yeah I'm going.

OK, only slightly J-up related, because I discussed our plans to go check out Marfa. Carry on.

Unexpected, but received with pride!

Looking over Six Strings leftovers from Lulling, Lubock and Whole Foods, there was talk of launching a bbq brisket croissant, with the flagship store in Paris, Texas. So this is your chance to get in on the ground floor!

I have to add my thanks to Baron (and his silver machine and Neverknows too) for being such a great host. Anyone who gets a chance to go to Austin, go. You will receive some serious hospitality.

I am back in New York and not a little bummed. Austin is an excellent town. Everything was so easy with this jolly up. If going out and listening to music was this easy in New York, I'd hear a lot more music.

And don't start me on the tacos...
The crazy music drives you insane
